CHICAGO -- New York Knicks big man Kristaps Porzingis, one of the NBA's rising stars, is done for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee on Tuesday night at the fabled Madison Square Garden.
The mishap occurred in the 8:50 mark of the second quarter when Porzingis landed awkwardly after dunking over Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Knicks went on the lose the contest, 103-99.
The injury is a devastating blow for the Knicks, who are still in the hunt for a playoffs berth in the Eastern Conference with a 23-32 record, just five games behind the Phildelphia 76ers.
The 7-foot-3 Porzingis was the Knicks' leading scorer with 22.7 points per game and he led the NBA in blocked shots with 2.4 a contest. The date of his surgery has yet to be determined but a projected timetable for his return is pegged at 10 months, according to an ESPN report.
