GRANDMASTER (GM) Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. defeated Fide Master (FM) Nelson "Elo" Mariano III in the first-ever Philippine Chess Blitz Online Face Off Series on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Alabang Hills Village, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.
The Quezon City resident Antonio beat the Bacoor, Cavite bet Mariano, 7-4, in the blitz chess individual event organized by Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) founding president Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe.
"Chess players, enthusiats can watch live and replay at YouTube Cliburn Anthony Orbe's channel," said Atty. Orbe, who is also the newly-installed treasurer of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
It was sweet revenge for the 13-times Philippine Open champion Antonio, who was beaten by Mariano in their first meeting in 2012.
"Masayang-masaya po talaga ako, kasi nanalo din ako kay Elo (Nelson Mariano III)," The Calapan, Oriental, Mindoro Antonio said who is the 27th World Seniors Vice Champion in Acqui Termi, Italy last November.
It shall be recalled that in 2012, Mariano edged Antonio in the fourth round of the 6th Gathering of Knights and Kings (Fianchetto Blitz Chess Tournament) that was held at the Ramon Magsaysay Cubao High School in Quezon City.
Mariano, who graduated Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication major in Broadcasting at the University of the East (UE) Recto, Manila won the Open division title in the said chessfest.
They never met again until Antonio issued a challenge for a rematch and Mariano readily accepted it.
In the side event, Atty. Orbe toppled Jerson Bitoon, younger brother of US based Grandmaster Richard Bitoon, 2-0.
"Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe I demand a rematch," said Jerson, one of the top players of multi-titled University of Sto. Tomas chess team during his College days.
The first-ever Philippine Chess Blitz Online Face Off Series resumes on February 10, 2018, Saturday with a match pitting Antonio's Team against Laylo and Friends All Star Chess squad in the unique Team format.
