TAGUM CITY - There was a great number of scouts all over Southeast Asia and some countries in Asia who converged here at the Energy Park, Tagum City, Davao del Norte for the 6th ASEAN Scouts Jamboree. The official count during opening ceremony was 29, 753 scouts and adult leaders, a record breaking attendance in any Asian scouts gathering.

The jamboree officially opened on November 27 at the sprawling arena of this 25-hectare recreation and relaxation site in Tagum City. It was graced by Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and Tagum City Mayor Allan Rellon, and the Boy Scouts national and international officials.

The international scouting event is participated in by contingents of nine ASEAN countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Brunei as well as those of other Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, East Timor, Nepal, Netherlands, Maldives, Macau, Kuwait, South Korea, India, Hong Kong and Bangladesh.

The jamboree has the theme "Growth and Stability" is the second gathering of scouts in the region since the Philippines hosted the first ever ASEAN Scouts Jamboree in Mt. Makiling, Los Ba?os, Laguna more than 20 years ago.

Tagum City Mayor Allan Rellon, who acts as the Camp Chief, said in his welcome message that "the true essence of the event is to make friends, develop camaraderie and contribute to the growth and stability of the scouting movement in the ASEAN Region." He further said that "the gathering of the scouts from across the world bears a sense of higher purpose to build friendships to solidify the region?s oneness."

There was a Parachute Exhibition and Airshow and a Pyro-Musical Fireworks Display after the opening ceremony. Tagum City also played host to the 16th National Scouts Jamboree in 2015.

The activities of the Jamboree include Aquatics and Water Fun, Disaster Risk Reduction Management Water Safety, Campcraft, Jungle Adventure Trail, ASEAN Faith and Belief, Crossroads of Culture, ASEAN Better World and Village, Team Sports Festival and Native Games, Emergency Preparedness, Global Development Village, Community Service Challenge, and E-Park Challenge Valley.

There are night activities such as Subcamp and Grand Campfire, ASEAN Cultural Night, Woodbadge Reunion, Youth Jam Concert and Scouts Got Talent.

Special activities are Youth Forum, First Aid and Rescue Olympics, Trade Exhibition, Fancy Drill Competition, Skill-O-Rama, Scout Rally, Showando, KAB Scout Olympics, Kawan Holidays, Arena Shows, Scout Advancement, Jamboree Fiesta, Scout Quiz Bee, Cultural Dancing Festival, Court of Honor/Eagle Conclave, and Closing Ceremony.

Tagum City did a good hosting of all these activities. The ASEAN Jamboree will close on December 2, Saturday.

As BSP Council Chairman of Southern Leyte, I went with our contingent together with my wife Chona and slept in the camp together with the scouts and adults in our respective tents. Both of us are woodbadge holders and we belong to a scouting family with our three sons being Eagle scouts.
