Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KOs) of Cuba will engage in the most important fight of his professional career against Vasyl Lomachenko (9-1, 7 KOs) of Ukraine, and his head trainer Pedro Diaz is very positive of the outcome of the showdown on December 9 in the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York. "Rigo is an incredible boxer," Diaz said in an interview with ESPN Deportes. "He is always motivated and happy, he always trains like a great warrior and the energy he transmits while training is incredible. On December 9 he will have a great fight with Lomachenko." Rigondeaux is greatly motivated to triumph and gain the respect that he has not received since defeating Nonito Donaire in 2013 when many believed that the "Filipino Flash" was the favorite to win.

"He is always ready to fight with anyone, Rigo is a champion who does not choose his opponents and fights with anyone wherever they may be," said D?az, who has trained the Cuban champion for several years now and intends to assist Rigondeaux return to the top of the best pound per pound boxers. Diaz said the weight will not be a problem, since Rigondeaux has an excellent and serious team. "The greatest virtue of Rigondeaux is that he will go for victory," Diaz commented.

"The Lomachenko versus Rigondeaux title fight is a signature event in the sport of boxing. It matches the two greatest fighters in Olympic boxing facing off against each other. Never before in boxing history have two boxers, each the winner of two Olympic gold medals, faced each other in a professional boxing match," said Top Rank boss Bob Arum. "It will be a big battle for boxing fans and boxing history. This battle will open our maximum potential," Lomachenko said.

As a sport, boxing has been around for thousands of years. It started in some parts of Africa, before migrating over the Mediterranean Sea and spreading throughout Europe. The Ancient Greeks believed that boxing was a game played by the gods so they included boxing in the ancient Olympic Games starting 688 BC. A Mesopotamian stone tablet was discovered in Baghdad, Iraq, showing two men engaging in a fight. It is estimated to be about 7,000 years old.
