It was indeed a clash of fistic brilliance as thirteen pairs of young pugs from different boxing clubs in Cebu gather in Naga City last October 7, Saturday at 6 pm. Dubbed as "Fist Wars: Naga Boxing Challenge", open boxing fight fans were treated to high-octane bouts as boxers were eager to show off their pugilistic flair. The event sees a resurgence of boxing in this southern industrial city, which hosted numerous professional boxing cards a few years ago.
Lagtang, Talisay City-based 10,000 BC Boxing Club emerged with most number of wins in the tournament. The covered court of Naga City Baywalk was the venue of the hostilities. RWS Boxing gym, CCSC gym and Naga City boxing also sent boxers to the competition.
A pair of 23-kg boxers opened the contests as David Mancao defeated Neil John Fajardo via UD, next came a 3rd-round TKO win by Wyn Cabradilla against Daniel Ailis, Justin Trazo wins a UD versus Alexis Carlo Inoc, fourth bout sees Joperson Trazo winning another UD against Jemuel Paradela. Ashley Fajardo scores a close, SD win over Markian Pomar, Riel Gabunilas stops Elton Igot in the second stanza while James Briones defeated Jerwin Dingcong via second round TKO.
In the only girls bout of the night, Janine Basnillo exacted revenge over rival Trisha Marie Llamas by decisioning the latter via SD, Francis Padilla TKO's Kenneth Delantar in the third stanza, John Paul Gabunilas halts Jethro Abaquita in the third round, Mardy Cardeno scores a UD over Norman Russiana, Berland Robles defeated Arianwin Melgo via UD and Marco Pomar defeated Marjun Tagbe in another close bout via SD.
The event was part of the activities for the annual fiesta celebration of the City of Naga and was made possible through the city government lead by Mayor Kristine Chiong and sportsman Gerry Canonigo. There will be more plans to advance the sport in the city as it intends to initiate it's own boxing program and establish a training facility in the future.
