Celebrated trainer Freddie Roach says the fight that boxing fans want to see is a rematch between Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez should Marquez get by challenger Rocky Juarez in their title fight on November 3.
In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Roach said that while there is nothing definite yet on Pacquiao?s next fight ?most people want to see a rematch with Marquez? or the winner of the bout with Juarez.
Roach mentioned the fact that they were ?talking about the winner of the Humberto Soto - Joan Guzman WBO title fight? scheduled for November 17 or moving up and fighting WBC champion David Diaz who defeated Erik Morales in his last fight or the winner of the lightweight unification bout between Juan ?Baby Bull? Diaz and Julio Diaz for the IBF, WBA and WBO titles.
Roach admitted that a Marquez rematch would be ?a tough fight? but didn?t seem concerned about moving up in weight to fight David or Juan Diaz saying Pacquiao is strong.
The two-time ?Trainer of the Year? said that Pacquiao really doesn?t have a problem making the 130 pound limit especially if he trains at the RWS Gym in Cebu even as Roach conceded that future fights are ?going to get tougher.?
Roach said he was pleased with Pacquiao?s performance in his lopsided unanimous decision over legendary Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera who announced his retirement at a post fight news conference. Roach said ?I thought Manny fought very well.?
Pacquiao?s close friend and confidant Rex ?Wakee? Salud said the difficulty of a Marquez rematch was that the Mexican was ?asking too much that?s the problem because he doesn?t draw fans although he is still the champion.?
Salud said Pacquiao?s next fight is scheduled sometime in February or March with two possible sites ? the gambling enclave of Macau or Vancouver, Canada. He said that Pacquiao wanted to fight at 130 ?but if the fight won?t push through he wants to move up to 135 pounds and fight the winner of the two Diazs? who are both champions.?
Pacquiao?s former manager Shelly Finkel said he thought ?it was hard for Manny to look good against Barrera, the way he (Barrera) fought. As a result the audience did not get the excitement they are used to in a Manny fight.? At the same time Finkel who manages Juarez said he believes Pacquiao ?should fight the winner of the Marquez-Juarez, next.?
