That Filipino ring icon Manny Manny Pacquiao still has the power in his fists, the reigning World Boxing Organization welterweight crown owner showed Saturday when he fell Mexican lightweight Adrian ?Chinito? Young to the seat of his pants during sparring at the Pacman Gym in General Santos City.
A devastating right uppercut that found its mark to the chin of the up-and-coming campaigner of Chinese descent from Los Mochos in Senaloa town in the second round of their four-round skirmish sent Pacquiao?s mate reeling to the ropes before finally falling down to the canvas.
Young immediately stood up though as the eight-division met him at the center of the ring asking him if he?s okay. The sparring resumed after a while completing a 10-round session, including three rounds each against Filipino Leopoldo Doronio and Australian George Kambosos Jr.
?Nakakita lang ako ng butas, so naisip ko testingin ko nga kung puwede pa,? Pacquiao, who is currently in deep preparation for his coming title encounter with Australian challenger Jeff Horn, said Sunday, a day after the incident development welcomed by members of the training team.
?Actually ang instruction ni Freddie was to throw as many combinations as I could. Nabigyan nga ng pagkakataon,? he added.
?Mabuti naman hindi sya (Young) nagkaroon ng injury.?
?That was a strong, fast, devastating right that smacked the Mexican?s chin which he didn?t see coming, ? Pacquiao?s Australian strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune told Spin.Ph in a long distance telephone call evening of the same day.
Chief trainer Freddie Roach expressed no surprise though, saying he?s been waiting his pupil of 17 years to throw that kind of a haymaker for long while.
?As I?ve been telling you and to those who care to listen, Manny still has what it takes to send anybody to dreamland if he wants to. Plenty of it, actually. Yesterday he showed it to all of us,? Roach for his part, said.
?It?s been a long time, really and I?m happy to see it again,? the seven-time Trainer of the Year honoree of the Boxing Writers Association of America told this writer chuckling.
?Well, maybe Manny is already tired of hearing speculation that he?s on the way down in his career and to prove otherwise, he decided to finally come out from his shell,? he Hall of Fame guru said. ?And that could be dangerous to the opposition.?
Filipino assistant trainers Buboy Fernandez, Nonoy Neri and Roger ?Haplas? Fernandez echoed Roach?s observation.
?Hindi naman talaga nawawala ang punching power ni Manny. Nandyan lagi yan,? the Pacman?s boyhood pal in Barangay Labangal in GenSan, assessed.
?Hindi lang nya nagagamit. Kailangan kasi kay Manny galitin mo. Masyadong mabait kahit sa kalaban. Pero kapag nagalit, magtago ka na. Kung hindi, bugbog ka,? Roger Fernandez, Buboy?s younger brother, butted in.
