World Boxing Organization welterweight titleholder Manny Pacquiao vowed to be in top fighting form next week or two weeks before his coming title showdown with Australian challenger Jeff Horn scheduled July 2 in Queensland premier city of Brisbane.
This, the 38-year-old Filipino lawmaker himself and his handlers assured boxing fans, especially from Down Under, who will be seeing him in flesh for the first time in the 12-round encounter billed as the biggest yet to be held in that country.
?Yes, Australian boxing fans and those from all over the world who have been keenly awaiting for this fight to happen, which they said will be the biggest boxing event in Australia, can also expect the best in me,? Pacquiao promised after Saturday?s 40-round training session in his own Pacman Gym at the heart of his hometown General Santos City.
?I have been preparing hard for this fight, precisely para mabigyan ang fans ng pinakamagandang laban na puwede nilang mapanood. Ibibigay ko sa kanila ang gusto nila, especially doon sa hindi pa ako nakikitang lumaban ng personal,? Pacquiao told Spin.Ph via text message.
?At mabibigyan ko lamang sila ng magandang laban kung maganda ang preparasyon,? he said. ?This early, two weeks before we leave for Australia, what I can say is I?m already prepared physically and mentally.?
?Medyo toned down nga ng bahagya ang ensayo nitong nakaraang isang linggo mula noong dumating kami dito sa GenSan. Ahead nga kami sa schedule kaya kailangan hinay-hinay muna to avoid being over-trained,? Pacquiao, who left Manila, were he started his build up program, with his team Sunday last week.
?Ang ipapangako ko lamang sa lahat ng fans, lalo na sa mga kababayan natin na pag-akyat ko sa ring sa July 2, handang-handa na ako makipaglabang muli para sa kanila at sa bayan natin,? Pacquiao stressed.
The 11-time world titlist in eight weight divisions had added 27 more rounds of hitting the pad (nine each last Monday, Wednesday and Friday) besides 30 more rounds in sparring with World Boxing Council no. 9 lightweight contender George Kambosos Jr. and promising Mexican junior-lightweight Adrian Young.
Sparring was in the frequency of nine rounds Tuesday, 10 rounds Thursday and 11 roundw Saturday. Chief trainer Freddie Roach did away with working with the mitts on sparring days to lessen the load.
Roach said though that starting Monday, sparring frequency will be increased to 12 up to 15 rounds, depending on the needs, until the team leaves for Brisbane on June 24.
?Manny?s been working like crazy the past two weeks in Manila. He looked he?s hungry to be in the gym. We felt we had to give him rest the whole week last week,? the Hall of Fame trainer explained.
?Tagal na kasing walang boksing kaya sabik na sabk kumbaga. Naging masyadong busy sa senado. May mga hearing sa araw tapos session sa gabi. Next week, balik na uli sa heavy training,? Pacquiao said.
?Mahirap din naming kalawangin sa kakulangan ng ring activity,? he said. ?Gaya nang dati, dalangin ko lang huwag akong magkakroon ng mabigat na injury from now during training hanggang sa araw nang laban.
