The World Boxing Organization welterweight champion on Thursday dismissed all doubts expressed by several quarters about his preparation for his coming fight against Australian Jeff Horn set July 2 in Brisbane.
The 38-year-old fighting senator punished local boys Leopoldo Doronio and Fil-Indon Sonny Katiandagho in separate sparring sessions of three rounds each in the process dispelling reports he?s way behind in his training, being distracted by his duties as lawmaker, etc.
Why, the only man to win 11 world championships in eight weight divisions was also accused of being in his worst state of his career.
Displaying only a shade of his known punching power and speed, Pacquiao nearly broke Doronio?s already injured right ribs with hard blows in their entire three rounds of solid exchanges.
?Nasaktan na ito noong Tuesday, lalo pang sumakit nang pagtatamaan kanina,? Leopoldo an Orient-Pacific lightweight contender with a 15-fight, 14-win record with 10 KOs, told this writer after his no-nonsense give-and take skirmish with his dancing mate.
Katiandagho, a former World Boxing Coucil lightweight junior titlist, on the other hand, nearly fell to the canvas in the final round of his side of sparring.
?Naramdaman ni Boss parang babagsak ako. Tinanong nya kung okay ako at nang tumango ako, sabi nya, mag-ingat na lang ako,? the General Santos-born son of an Indonesian migrant who owns an impressive 11-2 win-loss record with six stoppage confessed.
Both Doronio and Katiandagho attested to Pacquiao?s power-punching ability while both adding though that the Pacman still lacks the other part of his arsenal ? speed ? known to the close to his 60 victims I his 22-year career.
?Malakas at matindi pa rin talaga siyang magbigay. Iindahin mo talaga. Yung bilis niya, kulang pa, pero darating din yun. Baka two weeks lang kumpleto na,? the duo, who were also the initial mates of Pacquiao in his last fight last year with Jessie Vargas, chorused.
?Yung lakas niya gaya noong umalis siya para mag-resume ng training sa LA last year for his fight with Vargas. Hindi nagbago kait halos pitong buwang na-bakante, Hindi kinalawang,? Doronio assessed.
As usual, Pacquiao tested, too, the heavy bag, double end ball to determine the legs-to-hands-eyes coordination and he speed ball before climbing back to the ring for a nine-round job o the mittw with chief trainer Freddie Roach.
The close to four-hour huffing, puffing and sweating session turned Roach, strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune and assistant trainers Buboy Fernandez, Nonoy Neri and Roger ?Haplas? Fernandez smiling and nodding their heads in approval to what transpired.
