ROACH, FORTUNE: "NO REASON TO WORRY"

?No reason to worry. No cause for alarm.?

This, Manny Pacquiao, his handlers led by chief trainer Freddie Roach and strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune chorused in allaying fears that the World Boxing Organization welterweight champion is lagging behind in his preparation for his coming title fight with Australian challenger Jeff Horn.
Pacquiao will be defending his 147-pound crown against Horn on July 2 in what is dubbed the biggest boxing event Down Under at the Suncorp Arena in Brisbane in Queensland.

?It was sort of hard for me to move, kasi kasisimula pa lang namin ng plyo at siyempre apektado ang movement ko,? Pacquiao himself admitted to this writer after Wednesday?s workout at the Elorde Gym.

The 38-year-old Senator was referring to the plyometric exercises his Filipino assistant trainers Buboy Fernandez, Nonoy Neri and Roger ?Haplas? Fernandez had just started to insert to his training regimen last Saturday, eve of Roach?s and Fortune?s arrival in Manila from Los Angeles.

Plyometrics exercises, also known as "jump training" or "plyos", are routines in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing power (speed-strength).

Plyometric workouts can be performed anywhere from 1-3 days per week. High intensity, low volume plyometric workouts, should be performed 1-2 times per week by well conditioned athletes only, ideally on the same day when weight training is held.

?Look, we arrived here only Sunday when our guy had barely started sparring the day before. ?He did the mitts with me last Monday and he impressed me,? Roach recalled.

?Yesterday, we saw him sparred for the first time. Of course, he showed a bit stiff in his movement. It follows, there?s nothing wrong about that,? the Hall of Famer pointed out. ?This thing about I was disappointed and that he?s lagging behind in training, I don?t know where they (media) got that.?

?Manny?s in the gym for only two weeks and he?s already sparring and doing the plyo, which means training has been on tract,? Fortune, an Australian native now based in the U.S. assured. ?That?s besides the early morning workout.?

Roach agreed though that everything is not yet in place as far as transforming the eight-division champion in top competitive form following seven months of ring inactivity.

?A lot of things have yet to be done and that?s the reason why we?re already here. It?s still five and-a-half weeks before the fight. Enough time to find what we still lack and address them,? he said.

?Meanwhile, rest assured that everything is in order, Manny, as before, will be doing what he ought to do in spite of his duties as a lawmaker and that at end of the day, he?ll be in Australia fighting for your country and people and win!?
