If World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao challenger Jeff Horn?s estimate will hold true, the Filipino 147-pound crown holder will go down in defeat come their July 2 showdown at the Suncorp Arena in Brisbane.
Why, the 29-year-old former schoolteacher even predicted he can send the 38-year-old fighting senator on the seat of his pants from a good right in the first round of their 12-round encounter to emerge the new king of the division.
Pacquiao?s aggressive style of fighting, Horn assessed in an article written by Gfantlee Kieza that appeared in Australia?s Courier Mail, can prove to be the eight-division titlist?s waterloo, citing the Filipino icon?s performance against fellow Aussie Nadel ?Skinny? Hussein held 17 years ago in Antipolo City.
?Manny throws a lot of punches," Horn told Kieza in said article. ?The more he throws the more chances I?m going to have to counter punch. Anything can happen in a fight. Who knows this might even be a first round knockout like it was when I won the Australian title against Sam Colomban.?
The fight Horn was referring to, held October 14, 2000, was won by the then 22-year-old Pacquiao via a 10th round TKO, his third such stoppage victory that year and fourth since losing the World Boxing Council flyweight plum a year ago.
It was Pacquiao?s second defense of the WBC International junior-flyweight diadem, while Hussein, borN in Lebanen and based Down Under, was protecting an impressive and unbeaten 19-0 win-loss slate.
An overly aggressive Hussein dropped the Filipino in the 4th period, but the Filipino came back In the fifth inflicting cut in Hussein?s over and under left eye. The fight was eventually stopped AT 1:48 of the 10th. After nine rounds, Pacquiao emerged the clear winner on counts of 87-80, 87-83, 87-85 on all cards.
Horn?s camp doesn?t solely rely on watching tapes of Pacquiao?s previous fights, including his 6th round KO loss to Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez. Chief trainer Glenn Rushton, in fact, remains hopeful that Ukraine?s world junior-lightweight champ Vasyl Lomachenko, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, will accept his offer to be his ward?s main sparring partner three weeks before the fight as training intensifies ahead of the biggest bout in Australian history.
?We?re hoping to have Jeff spar 60 rounds with Lomachenko over two weeks with the sparring finishing a couple of weeks before the fight," Rushton said. ?Lomachenko is thinking about bringing his wife and children with him to Brisbane for a holiday so things are looking very positive that he will be coming.?
The WBO no. 2 contender Has also been training with Mackay?s undefeated rising star Liam Paro, his first sparring session for the big fight.
