Angel Garcia wants son Danny to retire after losing to Thurman

Brooklyn, NY - The outspoken father and trainer of Danny Garcia wanted his son to hang up his boxing gloves hours after losing his World Boxing Council welterweight title to fellow champ Keith Thurman (World Boxing Association).

"I am so disgusted with boxing right now. I really want Danny to retire today. I really want him to retire," said Angel Garcia.

The young Garcia lost for the first time in his 34-bout professional career Saturday night at the Barclays Center in New York. He also lost his WBC belt in the process by a narrow Split Decision to the still undefeated Thurman (27-0).

The idea of a rematch with Thurman which his son welcomed was also immediately opposed by the elder Garcia despite the close results.

"Rematch? No, because we don?t believe it. The only one we gave a rematch was (Erik) Morales. I don?t think we should get a rematch with him. We should start all over, if Danny wants to do it. But the advice I would give him as a dad, we ain?t no stepping stone to nobody. We ain?t no stepping stone.?

The decision was not the only thing that angered Angel Garcia. He was also critical of Thurman's game plan against his son in the 12 round contest that was shown live nationally via CBS.

?You can?t win a fight running. He hit Danny with a good shot in the first. It was a good shot. Danny sucked it up and came back in the second. He was there in front of him. Then he ran all the way from the six, seven, eight nine, ten, eleven, twelve. How do you win the fight? You?ve gotta to be kidding me brother. This is a sport where you?ve got to do contact with the fighter, with the person in front of you. You just can?t run."

Garcia also compared the just concluded fight to the junior middleweight showdown between Erislandy Lara and Saul Alvarez in 2014 in Las Vegas which also ended in a close Split Decision (Alvarez).

"It?s like when Lara and Canelo when they fought. It?s the same thing. They gave it to Canelo for being the aggressor. You know what I?m saying? I?m not being a sore loser or nothing like that. But if he would?ve beat, he would?ve had won, then I?ll say, I take my hat off and say, Good job champ. But you can?t beat a world champion like that. You just cannot."

But despite his father's immediate post fight reactions, Danny, 28, would still want to continue fighting and he also would like another crack at Thurman if given the chance to avenge his loss.

"I would love to, I would love to do the rematch and we'll see what happens."
