2016 BATANG PINOY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS OPENS IN TAGUM CITY

Festive mood are all over the place as the City of Palms in southern Mindanao hosts the Philippine Youth Games, popularly known as "Batang Pinoy". Considered one of the the biggest national sporting event for under-17 year old boys and girls, the games is expected to attract more than a thousand aspiring athletes in different sports.

Opening ceremonies will be held today at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex at 3pm, which is expected to be prestigious as dignitaries like President Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Manny Pacquiao were both invited to grace the event.

Meanwhile, boxing competition will be much bigger as there will be a total of 379 registered girls and boys. To accommodate such huge turnout, tournament organisers led by supervisor Karina Picson and international referee/ judge Maximo Abalos has decided to start with juniors boys 15 to 17 year old category. The category alone has 178 registered boxers and will be followed the next day with school boys division. Finally, young girls in the school girls and junior girls division take center stage on Tuesday. Preliminary bouts at the junior boys category will start at 1:30 pm today at the Tagum City Pavilion with more than 70 bouts to be contested.
