Ten amateur bouts served as preliminaries to the Adones Aguelo vs. Rodel Wenceslao Asian Boxing Federation lightweight championship last Friday at the Maasin City Gym.
Maasin City boxers won six of seven amateur fights they entered in a boxing encounter joined by fighters from
Baybay City, Hindang and Hilongos of Leyte and Macrohon and Padre Burgos of Southern Leyte.
In the main amateur boxing event, Romie Evale of Maasin City faced John Daniel Ruiz of Baybay City in a battle of the best boxers from both cities. Evale defended well and countered Ruiz's punches as the Baybay fighter aggressively attacked the Maasin boxer all over the ring.
But Evale threw the greater number of punches and connected more blows than the hits of Ruiz. Thus the judges were convinced to score the fight 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 unanimously for Evale.
The pro-bound Evale was the 2013 Batang Pinoy National Finals bronze medalist and 2014 PLDT-ABAP Visayas Boxing Championships gold medalist.
