The $500,000 World Cup of Boxing in which the Philippines routed Mexico 5-1 turned in excellent television ratings with the giant Philippine broadcast network ABS-CBN virtually routing its staunch rival GMA in a head-to-head battle on Sunday, August 12 telecast.
The ratings from AGB-NMR for Mega Manila households indicated that in fact the highest ratings was for the WBO super bantamweight title fight in which Rey ”Boom Boom” Bautista suffered a stunning first round KO at the hands of the menacing Daniel Ponce De Leon which was the Filipinos only loss. The Bautista-Ponce De L:eon main event rated 31.0 percent in Mega Manila, 32.2 percent in Metro Manila and 28.7 percent in the suburbs.
The WBO bantamweight title fight in which veteran Gerry Penalosa, the former WBC super flyweight champion scored a spectacular one-punch knockout in the eighth round over lanky Jhonny Gonzales rated 27.6 percent in Mega Manila, 27.7 percent in Metro Manila and 27.4 percent in the suburbs.
Super flyweight Z “The Dream” Gorres who put on a masterful performance of boxing against former WBC light flyweight champion Eric Ortiz rated 21.7 percent in Mega Manila as well as Metro Manila and a slightly lower 21.6 percent in the suburbs.
The battle between promising AJ “Bazooka” Banal and Mexico’s Jorge Cardenas rated 16.2 percent in Mega Manila, a higher 16.6 percent in Metro Manila and 15.5 percent in the suburbs while the pre-fight primer which began at 8:29 a.m. rated 8.0 percent in Mega Manila, 9.2 percent in Metro Manila and 5.7 percent in the suburbs.
However, when the “live” studio segment hosted by popular TV and Radio host Korina Sanchez opened at 9:05 a.m. and lasted until the start of the Banal fight the ratings jumped to 24.6 percent in Mega Manila, 25.1 percent in Metro Manila and 23.6 percent in the suburbs.
In contrast the reported ratings for GMA in the same time slots in Mega Manila showed a 12.1 percent rating for Daimos, 12.1 percent for Voltes V and 16.4 percent for Sobrang Okey Pare or SOP which once again showed that good fights involving Filipino boxers draw the audiences.
