TAGUIG CITY, METRO MANILA ? Jerwin Ancajas gave a career-best performance Saturday night in front of a very animated hometown crowd and seized the IBF world super flyweight title from Puerto Rican McJoe Arroyo after twelve tension-filled rounds.

Both boxers gave a courageous performance worthy of the venue - a sports hall inside a Philippine military base.

The first half of the fight tested the ring intelligence of the two southpaws. Both tried to establish their jab and traded well placed punches. But Ancajas? counter right hook and overhand left gave him the slight edge.

Arroyo displayed little signs of ring rust. But his last fight, winning the vacant title against Arthur Villanueva of the ALA gym, was fourteen months ago.

Ancajas wisely went to the body to test Arroyo?s stamina and resilience. Neither boxer landed a punch significant enough to hurt the other until the sixth round when Ancajas hurt Arroyo with a hard left.

Ancajas? edge in the power department unraveled as the rounds progressed. He pinned Arroyo in a neutral corner and landed a swift volley that blasted the Puerto Rican through the ropes.
Arroyo managed to get up and tried to make a fight out of it in the next round. But Ancajas still finished the round strong. Ancajas continued to mix in his hooks to the body sensing that Arroyo was fading.

Arroyo was now on the back foot but knowing that his title belt was slipping away, threw everything he had in the last two rounds. But Ancajas did not lose control, his stamina was excellent and emerged victorious on all the judges? cards.

Gil Co (Philippines) -118-109, Carlos Colon (Puerto Rico) ? 115-112, Takeo Harada (Japan) ? 117-110.

The crowd erupted in celebration and yelled themselves hoarse.

Ancajas joins Nonito Donaire (WBO super bantamweight), Johnriel Casimero (IBF flyweight) and Marlon Tapales (WBO bantamweight) as the reigning Filipino world champs. Donnie Nietes has relinquished his WBO junior flyweight title to seek bigger fights at flyweight.
