2016 RIO OLYMPICS: PH BOXERS' TORMENTORS MARTINEZ AND CORDINA HAVE CONTRASTING FATES

Joahnys Argilagos (Cuba) will face Yurberjen Martinez (Colombia) in the 49-kg (lightflyweight) men's boxing semifinals in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Argilagos was the gold medalist during the 2015 World Amateur Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Martinez was the same boxer who dominated Filipino Rogen Ladon, 3-0 in the Round of 16. Martinez won over Samuel Carmona of Spain, 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

In the other semifinal bout, Hasanboy Dusmatov (Uzbekistan) will fight Nico Hernandez (USA). Dusmatov won the gold medal in the 2015 Asian Amateur Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

Hernandez won the silver medal at the 2016 American Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the men's flyweight. He defeated Argentina?s Leandro Blanc in the Olympic semifinals. The same Martinez of Colombia defeated Hernandez on points to win the gold in that American Olympic qualifier.

British boxer Joseph Cordina who triumphed over Filipino Charly Suarez by split decision in the Round of 32 was defeated by Hurshid Tojibaev of Uzbekistan by decision in the Round of 16 of the lightweight division.

In the same division Italian pro boxer Carmine Tommasone was blanked, 3-0 by Lazaro Alvarez of Cuba. 2012 London Olympic bronze medalist and three-time world amateur champion Alvarez will face Carlos Balderas of USA in the quarterfinals.
