Rodel Mayol who lost in his bid to win the IBF light flyweight championship when he got tagged by a cracking right hook and lost by an eighth round knockout to Ulises Solis last August 4 has offered to help Bert Batawang in his quest to wrest the title from the Mexican southpaw.

Mayol who had Solis on the verge of a knockout in the sixth round but failed to finish the job told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today “I want to help Bert (Batawang) in sparring in order that he can win against Solis.”Batawang, the 35 year old veteran with a record of 50-6 with 34 knockouts earned the title shot thanks to the efforts of renowned international matchmaker Samson Lewkowicz after Batawang’s title eliminator in the Philippines-Mexico World Cup was cancelled when his opponent was found to have a torn retina in both eyes.

Mayol revealed that he will be working out at the Wild Card Gym of celebrated trainer Freddie Roach in Los Angeles every day and that “maybe next week I will start sparring with him (Batawang).”

Since his defeat Mayol has started light training saying he wants to “maintain my condition and have a healthy body” although there is no word on his next fight.

Mayol said he believes Batawang has “a big chance to win in his fight” against Solis.

He said the only advice he could give the veteran Batawang was to “throw three or more combinations so that Solis cant run and always put his guard up and counter immediately.”
