CASIMERO TO DEFEND IBF FLYWEIGHT TITLE AGAINST UNBEATEN BRITON CHARLIE EDWARDS

International Boxing Federation flyweight champion Johnreil Casimero will make a voluntary defense of his title against unbeaten Briton Charlie Edwards, a former member of the British amateur boxing team maybe sometime in September at the Manchester Arena in London according to his co-promoter Sammy Gello-ani.

Gello-ani told The Standard that its a "voluntary defense and an activity fight" which is being negotiated by international matchmaker and promoter Sampson Lewkowicz and Sean Gibbons.

He said Casimero has begun some light training because the fight is some months away. The 23 year old Charlie Edwards defeated Phil Smith during their English Flyweight Championship bout at the Manchester Arena on November 21, 2015 in Manchester, England and is unbeaten with a record of 7-0 with 3 knockouts. He followed this up by winning the vacant World Boxing Council International flyweight Silver title with a lopsided shutout decision over ten rounds against Luke Wilton last February 27 in a fight where Edwards hurt both his hands. Wilton had a record of 16-5-1 with 7 knockouts.

Casimero regained the world title with a dominating 4th round knockout of Thailand's Amnat Ruenroeng who earlier retained the title with a hugely controversial decision marred by a lousy refereeing job by Larry Doggett in a foul-infested bout in Thailand.

Casimero has a major advantage in experience over Edwards but cannot afford to take the young British fighter, lightly. The 26 year old Filipino's record is 22-3 with 14 knockouts.
