In another terrible mismatch inexplicably sanctioned by the Philippine Games and Amusements Board as well as the World Boxing Council, Jerope Mercado suffered a 3rd round TKO at the hands of WBC super featherweight mandatory contender Miguel ?Mickey? Roman which was fought in one division higher at lightweight.
The WBC reported that Roman swept aside Mercado who was often backed into the ropes and ?clobbered with unrelenting gusto? as the Filipino boxer ?pawed with his left jab which proved a costly mistake that he painfully paid for by getting caught with a stiff left hook in the opening round.?
Roman who was grimly determined to up the tempo in the secnd round and dropped Mercado with a flurry of punches which also opened up a deep cut on his right eyebrow.
Mercado got up quickly before Roman applied what the WBC described as ?a severe pasting.?
A huge left hook sent Mercado to the canvas who got up bravely before referee Sergio Hernandez stopped the bout at 1:10 of the 3rd round.
Roman whose last defeat was against Dante Jardon in a clash for the vacant Continental Americas super featherweight title on October 13, 2012 registered his 18th knockout victory in a row and said he wants to battle Francisco ?Bandido? Vargas for the world title.
In stark contrast the unranked 36 year old Mercado had previously lost 4 of his last 6 fights raising serious questions once again on how the GAB could sanction such an obvious mismatch and which tough-talking President Rody Duterte who is also a known boxing fan hasn?t done anything at present to replace the incompetent leaders of the GAB headed by chairman Ramon ?Monju? Guanzon and boxing division chief Dr. Nasser Cruz.
With the win Roman moved to 56-11 with 43 knockouts while Mercado dropped to 27-8-3 with 9 knockouts.
