BUBOY REMINISCES SUCCESSFUL CAMP AGAINST BRADLEY

Two weeks ago, Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao did what he's done many times before throughout his 21-year colorful and successful prizefighting career.

Like in his five previous setbacks, the now 37-year-old Sarangani Congressman came back swinging on the way to a lopsided unanimous decision triumph over American Timothy Bradley in the final episode of their trilogy.

That ability to get up after every knockdown, to come up victor once again defined the character of Pacquiao's 66-fight campaign that started in 1995 which produced 58 wins, highlighted by 38 stoppages with 6 defeats and 3 draws besides handing, too, the senatorial candidate the honor of becoming the only man to crown himself champion 10 times in eight weight divisions. It was on display in the identical 116-110 verdict submitted by judges Dave Moretti, Burt Clements and Steve Weisfeld.

The 'Fighter of he Decade' honoree of the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) was coming off his sixth loss dealt by arch-rival and now retired Floyd Mayweather Jr. nearly a year ago last May.

?It?s Manny?s character,? childhood pal and now trainer Buboy Fernandez said. ?He takes a loss, kind of gets frustrated, mad sometines, looks back, forgets the loss then trains for the next fight."

"Oftentimes he'll tell us, Nonoy (Neri) and Haplas (brother Roger Fernandez) and myself kalimutan na natin yun. Balik tayo alangalang sa bayan and our contryman," Buboy recalled.

"Thats' Manny Pacquiao for you. Alam na naman natin yun. Lahat ng laban para sa bayan. Para sa Pilipino. That third fight against Bradley was no different," Buboy, who himself is seeking a seat in the municipal council of hometown Polangui, Albay, explained.

"One time, during a lull in training in GenSan (General Santos City) he reminded us, saying, tinalo na natin ito (Bradley) nang dalawang beses. Ninakaw sa atin ang first fight. Nanalo tayo noong second fight. Kelangan manalo uli tayo ngayon. And win impressively," Buboy reminisced.

"We all saw the fight. Manny was very relaxed, very natural. Throwing punches like he did some 15 years back. He threw 201 power shots, hitting on 92 of them, Of the 438 total punches he threw, 122 found their target, " he dissected.

?We took care of everything during the GenSan and L. A. camps. A week before we drove to Las Vegas, we have covered all the bases. Meaning Manny had already reached his peak by then," Buboy said.

?Indeed, everything went well in training. Everybody was sort of celebrating already when we reached Vegas from coach Freddie (Roach), Manny himself. Wala na nga kaming ginawa except to run and limber up five days into the confrontation that Saturday night of April 9," he recalled.

Everybody did his part in the build up to the showdown, which turned out well. It was a good fight, he said. "That was a good night for us. For the country, for our people.?

It was an especially good night for Pacquiao who won eight of the 12-round showdown that was nearly scrapped and not shown on the strength of separate petitions to that effect but thrown to the trash bin by the Commission On Elections.

The three-time 'Fighter of the Year' of the same BWAA has retired, as of now. and is looking forward to continue serving his people as a government servant in the Upper Chamber.
