Multi-titled Australian promoter Peter Maniatis predicts the battle between unbeaten Australian Paul "2 Guns" Fleming and Mexico's Miguel Angel "Ranita" Gonzalez for the vacant WBC Continental Americas super featherweight title should be "an exciting fight."
Maniatis told The Standard that the former Olympian Fleming who fought in the 2008 Olympic Games as a featherweight isn't a powerful puncher but relies on his "speed and flashy style" to win.
Fleming is unbeaten in 20 fights with 14 knockouts and Maniatis told us his title fight against Gonzales "should be a good fight."
The Australian Olympic Committee has listed Fleming as one of that country's indigenous Olympians.
Fleming and Gonzalez will face each other in the co-main event of the "Time Has Come" showdown this Saturday in which WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire will defend his title against No. 4 ranked former 2004 Hungarian Olympian Zsolt Bedak. Gonzalez arrived on Monday while Fleming is expected to plane in today.
In an earlier press conference, Gonzalez appealed to Cebuano boxing fans for their support in his fight as he promised
an entertaining showdown this Saturday night.
The title fight was arranged by lead promoter Top Rank who handles Fleming in a presentation in cooperation with the
famed ALA Promotions and the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN.
Gonzalez who has a record of 22-7 with 12 knockouts predicted that his lethal combinations and excellent hand-speed will cause Fleming major problems.
Gonzalez was quoted as saying ?I am an intelligent and powerful boxer and I am very confident to win this fight. I?m not gonna give him any chance to win. I will take every opportunity to beat Fleming and I am going to give my best so that Filipino boxing fans will enjoy this fight.?
Gonzalez is accompanied by trainer Baltazar Molina who said they trained for a couple of months in Guadalajara, Mexico for this fight and have sparred with quality sparring partners including Mexican WBC Youth Silver lightweight champion Abraham Cordero.
Another Mexican, Miguel ?Mikol? Zamudio will face world No.1 ranked Filipino junior welterweight Jason ?El Ni?o? Pagara in the undercard.
The 27 year old Pagara, aptly nicknamed "El Nino" has a record of 37-2 with 23 knockouts and is coming off a 2nd round knockout of Santos Benavides in a scheduled ten round bout at the StubHub Center in Carson City, California on October 17, 2015.
The 24 year old Zamudio has a record of 35-8-1 with 21 knockouts.
