Brooklyn, NY - Someone isn't a fan of Manny Pacquiao's style in the ring.
Errol Spence Jr., this weekend's top performer in the boxing ring - is a critic of the recently retired (?) ring icon. Moments after his impressive victory against their common foe- Chris Algieri last Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, the unbeaten Spence Jr. told the press that Pacquiao lacks fundamentals in the ring.
"Manny Pacquiao, he's a hard puncher, he's quick but he lacks fundamentals. And that's what I'm big at, I'm big at fundamentals," said Spence Jr.
"I can cut the ring. I can vary on my punches and that's something that Manny Pacquiao can't do, he can't cut off the ring as you see with Floyd (Mayweather Jr.) and as you see with Chris Algieri."
Spence Jr. improved to 20-0 and 17 KOs after doing what Pacquiao failed to do when he met Algieri in Macau, China on November 23, 2014.
Pacquiao knocked down Algieri six times in their own encounter but the Filipino star was unable to stop the 5'10 contender from Huntington, New York.
Spence Jr. sent Algieri three times to the floor last Saturday and won via TKO in the 5th to the amazement of the 7000 plus fans at the venue.
"When Chris Algieri was hurt, he was able to move and recover. I didn't allow Chris Algieri to do that."
The victor's sentiments was echoed by his chief-trainer, Derrick James.
"Pacquiao is a very fast and very strong fighter but he has no skill, no fundamentals, he didn't have a jab. So, no defense," said James who admitted watching the Pacquiao-Algieri fight on tape.
"So, that's the difference between what you saw. If you have a guy who can just walk in behind a jab because he has defense. He didn't have to move around, he has defense. That's the difference," James elaborated.
"Not to say anything harsh about Pacquiao but that's the truth. If you watch boxing, someone got to watch every inch, every bit about everything because I'm in school all the time. You always got to be in school learning and I watch these fighters and that's exactly what they do. That's the difference with Errol is that I make sure that he keeps his hands up high, works the jab and work on different types of things that once he's in the ring, he can make small, little adjustments to step in to get out of the way of a counter shot."
Saturday's lead promoter Lou DiBella stated that Spence Jr. can beat anybody in the welterweight division, even telling reporters that he will bet his house that Pacquiao gets beat by Spence Jr. (LINK)
"No one you can't put in front of him, that he's gonna think he can't beat. And after the way you just saw, there's no one in this room that doesn't know enough about boxing, that this man is live, not live. This man has the potential to beat anyone in the world today - Anyone."
Unfortunately, we won't be able to find out if DiBella really stays true to his word and bets his house on Spence Jr. We also probably won't find out if the young boxer's fundamentals can beat a ring legend who accumulated 58 victories in 66 bouts because Pacquiao stated that his third fight against Bradley last April 9th is his last.
And if Pacquiao comes back, the biggest hurdle between the two meeting in the ring is between the fighter's promoters. Pacquiao is promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank while Spence Jr. is being advised by rival Al Haymon.
"I think I'm in the mix with everybody," says Spence Jr.
But he's most likely not in the mix to fight Pacquiao.
