PHILIPPINE flyweight champion Donny ?Mr. Shallow? Mabao fought toe-to-toe with Osaka-based Colombian Pablo ?El Trancito? Carillo but still lost via a unanimous decision in their 8-rounder fight held Sunday at the Edion Arena Osaka in Osaka, Japan.

Mabao, a former WBC Asia Council Continental minimumweight champion, got pinned down by Carillo in a scuffle and was given a mandatory count by the referee in the 4th round. Carillo used his elbow on Mabao?s shoulder to pin down the Filipino boxer.
?Hindi dapat siya binilangan, hindi naman knockdown yun,? said Mabao?s manager Brico Santig in a text message.

Mabao, however, was bombarded with left-right combinations in the 5th round.

The two exciting fighters traded punches and both suffered a cut near their eyes after an exchange of an over hand jab in the 6th round. Carillo?s wound, however, was much bigger.

?Mas malaki yung putok ni Carillo dahil din sa suntok ni Mabao,? said Santig.

They continued to exchange punches in the final two rounds to the delight of the crowd. Mabao?s punches, however, were mostly not counted by the judges as he suffered his 25th loss against 22 wins and 3 draws while Carillo improved to 19 wins, 4 loses and 1 draw.

The 27-year old Mabao, a native of Talakag, Bukidnon previously won by a majority decision against Michael Enriquez to capture the Philippine flyweight title last February 20 in Taguig City, Manila.

Carrillo previously scored a 4th round knockout against Jaipetch Chaiyonggym last December 27 in Osaka, Japan.

It was the main supporting bout, Yuki Nonaka (298W-8L-3D) also won by a unanimous decision against Yuto Shimizu (11W-3L-2D) to capture the Japanese super welterweight title.

The card was promoted by Kazama Promotions. ? LITO DELOS REYES
