Z “The Dream: Gorres may be out of the eagerly awaited Philippines vs Mexico World Cup of boxing at the Arco Arena on August 11 due to an eye problem which was discovered during a mandatory medical check-up conducted in Los Angeles.
In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Michael Aldeguer said that Gorres had a “slight tear in the retina” and the approval for him to fight Gerson Guerrero on August 11 had been withheld until a specialist examines the eye tomorrow.
However, Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez and international matchmaker Samson Lewkowick have indicated that Gorres would be out of the World Cup which would clearly affect the chances of the Philippines since Gorres was in great shape and considered an almost certain winner over Guerrero.
Aldeguer said he was hoping the problem could be fixed but chances of being cleared to fight on August 11 appeared slim.
It was the second depressing setback after doctors discovered a tiny blood clot outside the brain of Czar Amonsot following his gallant stand in a brutal WBO lightweight title fight with Michael Katsidis last Sunday and Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer’s statement that the Filipino southpaw would probably not be allowed to fight in Las Vegas again.
