BANGKOK, Thailand -- The World Boxing Council (WBC) will now be putting Muay Thai into the next level according to its President Mauricio Sulaiman.

Sulaiman announced it during a dinner and awarding night hosted by the WBC Asian Boxing Council (ABCO) held April 3 at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club in Bangkok, Thailand.

?We need to put Muay Thai into the next level now,? said Sulaiman, who helped introduced the Muay Thai-Tailandia (MTMT) Association in Mexico last February 25, 2015.

Present at the gathering co-hosted by boxing promoters Naris Singwangcha of Thailand and Brico Santig of the Philippines, were WBC Muay Thai and ABCO president Gen. Kovit Bhakdibhumi and the outstanding boxers, managers and promoters of Asia in 2015.
?Muay Thai thru the WBC Muay Thai is now already popular not only in Thailand but also now in Europe, United States and the whole part of Asia,? said Gen. Bhakdibhumi.

He mentioned how Sulaiman?s father and former WBC President Don Jose had the honor to have a private audience with His Majesty the King of Thailand, who entrusted WBC with the promotion of Muay Thai on November 22, 2001.

?Muay Thai is a sport that his late father Don Jose Sulaiman held close to his heart,? said Gen. Bhakdibhumi.

The younger Sulaiman, on the other hand, expressed his appreciation for WBC Muay Thai for establishing an organized and unified body and taking into consideration the spiritual aspects and safety.

?Muay Thai is not only a martial art but an integral part of the Thai way of life,? said Sulaiman, who also gave the awards to the outstanding boxers, managers and promoters in WBC ABCO.
WBC had recently named martial arts icon and movie action star Jean Claude Van Damme WBC Muay Thai Ambassador for his continuous efforts spreading this discipline.

Jean Claude started practicing martial arts at the age of 10. Now, he has become a role model and an icon of this discipline, a sport the WBC has promoted for its marvelous characteristics.
Muay Thai is a martial art completely integrated to the lifestyle of Thailand. Through it, the athletes learn about self-discipline, respect and a responsible way of living.
One of the main goals of WBC Lifetime President, Don Jose Sulaiman, was to help spreading the practice of Muay Thai in Mexico and other countries in Latin America.

?Counting with the support of Van Damme as ambassador, is an outstanding privilege, as he is a talented actor well known in all the world, but particularly important, Jean Claude is an exemplary human being and a disciplined athlete,? said Mauricio Sulaiman.

Van Damme started his Karate career at the age of 15, shaping a record of 44 victories and 4 loses.

Van Damme expressed his sincere gratitude to the Sulaiman Family, especially to the current WBC president.. He also acknowledged that the WBC Green and Gold Belt represents hope and glory, characteristics that makes him proud of having it. ? LITO DELOS REYES
