Veteran lightweight and Philippine team captain Charly Suarez broke the nose of his Chinese opponent Shan Jun to win by a 2nd round TKO to clinch a berth in the Rio Olympic Games.
The 27 year old veteran who earlier led the Filipinos charge when he decisively beat India?s tall, lanky and awkward military champion Dheeraj Rai of India by scores of 30-27 twice and 29-28 once in the quarter finals, started off aggressively and won the first round on the Scorecards of two judges while the third surprisingly gave it to Shan Jun.
However, in the second round Charly mauled the Chinese fighter, broke his nose and forced him to quit, winning by a smashing TKO.
All three judges scored the round for Chary with one judge turning in a 10-8 scorecard.
Suarez who is a skillful boxer with hand-speed and punching power and China's Shan Jun had no answer.
ABAP Executive director Ed Picson told The Standard that Suarez is aware that the 21 year old Shan Jun ?has the hometown crowd but I have a fight plan that I think will turn things around for me." And it did.
