Mayor Lim (L) poses with Amonsot in Las Vegas.

Popular Mayor Dan Neri Lim of Tagbilaran City who loves boxing with a passion says he is confident of the chances of Czar Amonost when he battles hard-hitting WBO lightweight champion Michael Katisidis in what may well turn out to be the most exciting fight on the blockbuster “Coming to Fight” card headlined by the Bernard Hopkins – Winky Wright clash in Las Vegas, Sunday (Manila Time).

In a long distance telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today following his return from Las Vegas where he visited Amonsot who is from Tagbilaran City, to give him a morale boost and some sound advice, Lim said Amonsot’s weight was perfect and his punches in the gym were “snappy and precise” and because of his fine condition he “never got tired” even after a grueling workout.

Lim said that noted matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz who does some work for Golden Boy Promotions had previously told him Amonsot had “no chance at all” against the devastating puncher Katsidis who is also reportedly quick but that now Lewkowicz was having second thoughts.

Lim observed that while Katsidis has the power he tends to fight wildly and leaves himself open which the crafty southpaw Amonosot should capitalize on. Lim said he told Amonsot to establish himself early “control the momentum of the fight and fight as if you are the champion.”

The Mayor told Amonsot “if you have the momentum and see an opening go for it.”

Amonsot has a record of 18-2-1 with 10 knockouts while Katsidis is undefeated in 22 fights with 20 KO’s.

The Amonsot-Katsidis title fight will be telecast by the giant Philippine broadcast network ABS-CBN along with the WBC interim featherweight title bout between Oscar Larios and undefeated Jorge Linares and the Ring Magazine light heavyweight championship bout between Hopkins and Wright.

The added attraction in the ABS-CBN coverage would be the presence of newly crowned IBF champion, the classy young Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire as special studio guest. The coverage will be anchored by veteran “In this Corner” TV boxing commentator Sev Sarmenta and the widely-traveled boxing reporter Dyan Castillejo.
