BUHAIN PROMISES TO PROBE SISNORIO REVELATIONS

Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain has promised to probe the revelations made by the father of the late boxer Lito Sisnorio who died after undergoing brain surgery following a fourth round knockout in a terrible mismatch against former world flyweight champion Chatchai Sasakul last March 30 in Bangkok.

Buhain also promised to investigate a report that an unknown Filipino boxer using the name Roger Monserto without the proper GAB clearance fought Sasakul in an eight round bout on Wednesday and lost by a unanimous decision.

In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, the GAB chairman who was the WBC official supervisor when Daisuke Naito of Japan ended the flyweight reign of Pongsaklek Wonjongkam in his third attempt said he would investigate the claims immediately upon his return. He said it was a pity he didn’t know about it earlier because promoter Piyarat Vachirantanawong was in Tokyo for the title fight.

Boxing judge and journalist Salven Lagumbay who visited the Sisnorio family in Marbel, Cotabato said the boxer’s father Angelito Sisnorio Sr and mother Consuelo told him they had not received Sisnorio’s purse for the ill-fated fight and not one centavo of the supposed insurance money that was promised them by Thai promoter and matchmaker Panya. In fact the promoter was quoted by Bangkok Post columnist Edward Thangarajah as saying he would “get in touch with his (Sisnorio’s) nearest relative and ensure that they are compensated. Lito fought in our program and it is our duty to look after his interests.”

Well known boxing writer Scott Mallon informed Viva Sports at that time that the 24 year old Sisnorio would receive 100,000 baht which amounted to around P135,000 which he said was “not much for a human life.”

Lagumbay who fell ill after the journey handed over nearly P50,000 which was generated by “Paclanders” who are ardent supporters of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and all other Filipino boxers to the parents of Sisonorio while Pacquiao himself reportedly contributed P50,000.

Buhain said he would also investigate the Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today report that a Filipino boxer identified as Roger Monserto who lost a unanimous decision in an eight round bout on Wednesday in Bangkok had no clearance to fight under the partial lifting of the ban on Filipino boxers fighting in Thailand following the Sisnorio tragedy. In an obvious mismatch Monserto who, according to boxrec.com had a record of no wins against three losses, two of them by TKO, was pitted against Sasakul who had a record of 60-3 with 38 knockouts.

Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today tried to reach GAB boxing division chief Dr. Nasser Cruz Wednesday after receiving an urgent overseas telephone call from a concerned boxing writer in Bangkok informing us of the mismatch and his fears over what might happen, but were unsuccessful. However, Tony Comia of the boxing division informed us that the GAB did not sanction a fight between a boxer named Roger Monserto and Sasakul and in fact said the GAB had no record of a fighter with that name.

Reporting on the Monserto-Sasakul fight, Mallon said it was regarded in Thailand as a “choke show” which. in other words, “wasn’t real.” He said the Filipino “should not have been allowed into the ring with a guy like Chatchai.“
