CHICAGO -- With a new head coach, a new system, and a slew of injuries, the Chicago Bulls are having a disappointing season which got worse early today when they lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers, 106-95.
With a precarious 27-26 record, the Bulls are currently in 8th place in the Eastern Conference. But with the retooled Detroit Pistons (27-27) and the recharged Washington Wizards (24-28) nipping at their heels, the Bulls are in danger of missing the playoffs.
Derrick Rose, who finished with 28 against the Cavs, is averaging 16.1 points, 4.7 assists and 3.7 rebounds a game in 46 starts. But the glowing stats mean little to the 2011 MVP, the youngest to ever win the plum at 22.
In a minute, Rose would gladly give up personal glory for team success.
After falling to the Atlanta Hawks last week, Rose gave me an audience at the United Center and we talked a little. I used the occasion to hand him the official boxing trunks that he requested from the great Manny Pacquiao.
"Oh man, this is awesome," the 6-foot-3 point guard said as he marveled at the blood-red shorts adorned with an assortment of logos that include the now iconic "PacMan."
The author talks to Derrick Rose.
"How's Manny. How's the shoulder?" Derrick asked.
I told him all was well with the Fighting Congressman who is eyeing a Philippine Senate seat in the May 9 elections. Manny, a former 8-division champ and pound-for-pound king, is also preparing for another rumble with Timothy Bradley, a rubber match penciled for April 9 in Las Vegas.
After he learned that Rose has received his trunks, Manny told me, "Pakisabi kay Derrick, Salamat" (Tell Derrick, thanks).
Pacquiao also reiterated his admiration for the 27-year old Rose. "Mabilis, magaling at hindi malaki ang ulo kahit superstar siya (He's fast, good and hasn't allowed super stardom to get into his head).
While there hasn't been much to be happy about in this Bulls' disappointing season, Derrick Rose found a reason to smile last week. Thanks to his friend and ally from another side of the world.
