GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The rich P2 million Bobby D. Pacquiao Random Chess Festival unwraps today at the SM Mall here.
Organized by the Eugene Torre Chess Foundation and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, the tournament is hoped to further promote and develop the system of play initiated by the late American chess genius Bobby Fischer, which according to the first Filipino and Asian Grandmaster, is best suited to the Filipinos.
The series, Torre said, is inspired by the huge success gained by the same tournament introduced by boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao, Bobby's elder brother who had staged tournament of this kind early this year.
As the Manny Pacquiao version of the competition, this tournament will be a team and individual format, according to Torre.
"Each team shall be composed of four regular players and without alternate unlike that held under the auspices of Congressman Manny," Torre announced. "Participating players must have an average ELO or NCFP rating 2100 or below based on the January 1, 2016 ranking."
Registration of entries, which started February 17, will be accepted until the coaches meeting today. Preference will be given to early registrants.
A top prize of P500,000 and a championship tropy awaits winner of team champiohip with the runner up going home richer by P280,000 and third placer P170,000.
