Not surprisingly, boxing fans have voted overwhelmingly for a title fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez and interim champion Gennady Golovkin as the fight they want to see this year.
In a survey released in ?InstantBoxing.com?, 47 percent of all votes cast by the fans wanted the Alvarez-Golovkin showdown in 2016.
Other fights that were voted on were Amir Khan vs Kell Brooks which received 31 percent of the votes. Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward, 17 percent and pound for pound No. 1 and undefeated flyweight Roman ?Chocolatito? Gonzalez of Nicaragua in a rematch with Mexico?s WBO/WBA champion Juan Francisco ?Gallo? Estrada 5 percent.
InstantBoxing announced the results over the weekend t after the voting process closed.
However, the World Boxing Council said fans will have to wait some more months, as the WBC had agreed to a request by both boxers to each have a tune-up fight before the mandatory clash that will decide the unique king of the 160 pounds division.
Golovkin is the reigning IBF, IBO, WBA super middleweight and WBC Interim champion with a record of 34-0 with 31 knockouts. He is a native of Kazakhstan.
Mexico?s ?Canelo? Alvarez has a record of 46-1-1 with 32 knockouts with his only defeat coming at the hands of undefeated pound for pound No.1 (now retired) Floyd Mayweather Jr on September 14, 2013.
