LAST year?s Palarong Pambansa gold medalist Jayson Mama of General Santos City has joined the Sanman Boxing Club.

Mama, 18, also a gold medalist in the 3rd Manny Pacquiao Sports Challenge Mindanao Open Amateur Boxing tournament held last month, made his first practice last Monday at the Sanman Boxing Gym located along Purok Malakas.

?Gusto nako mahimong world champion parehas sa akong mga idol na sila Manny Pacquiao ug Nonito Donaire,? (I want to become a world champion just like my idols Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire) said Mama in an interview before his first practice together with his trainer-coach Titing Laurente.

Mama?s twin brother Jerven, however, will remain in the amateur ranks.

Both of them, however, will still continue with their studies and will enroll as first year college students at the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial College in Gensan. They are both graduating high school students of the Dadiangas North High School.

Jerven will soon join the RMMC amateur boxing team, which is also under Laurente.

The twins, who are residents of Barangay Bula are products of the General Santos Amateur Boxing Academy.

Last year, Jason also won the gold medal in the Philippine National Games (PNG) Mindanao Qualifying held in Pagadian City and the Socsargen Region Athletic Association (SVRAA) in Gensan.

Jerven, likewise also won in the MPSC Mindanao Open in the 55 kgs.

?Later na siguro si Jerven papasok sa pro kasi pareho sila ng timbang ni Jason talaga. Napipilitan lang talaga siyang maglaro sa mas mabigat na timbang,? said Laurente.

Sanman?s Chief Executive Officer Jim Claude ?JC? Manangquil, on the other hand, thinks the Mama twins have improved now since he first saw them a few years ago.

?Jason has a big potential that?s why we took him in,? said Manangquil.

Jason will be making his pro debut on February 13 in Sanman?s inaugural boxing presentation for 2016 in Gensan. He will be facing Martin Paderogao (1-0-1) also of Gensan in a 4-rounder undercard.
?Gusto pud nako na makatabang sa akong pamilya mao mag-pro nako,? said Mama, a son of a retired farmer Joven, 63. (LITO DELOS REYES)
