Two promising fighters from the Philippine National Boxing team under the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) have won two prestigious awards from the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC), the continental federation for boxing, for their achievements in the year 2015.
ASBC Executive Director Bagdaulet Turekhanov announced the good news in an email from the ASBC headquarters in Almaty, Kazakhstan to ABAP.
ABAP executive director Ed Picson said the 22 year old Ladon of Bago, Negros Occidental, won silver in the Asian Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand and consequently was a bronze medal winner in the World Championships in Doha, Qatar the following month.
Picson said "unfortunately, he fell one win short of landing a slot in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in that qualifying tournament."
15 year old Cris Sander Laurente, one of two brothers from General Santos City who were conscripted by ABAP to the national pool in their talent discovery program, won silver in the Asian Junior Boxing Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last June.
Picson revealed "he could have gotten a higher podium finish if not for a bum stomach that hit him early in the tournament. While he fought through it in he quarters and the semis, he was so weak and dehydrated by the time the Finals came around that he had to withdraw from the gold medal bout."
ABAP President Ricky Vargas expressed elation over the news and congratulated the two boxers and the ABAP coaching staff as he exhorted the entire Philippine Boxing Team to always "strive for excellence for flag and country."
