The MP Promotions USA fight card covered by Viva Sports at the tidy, air-conditioned gym of the Philippine Navy was exciting and competitive and thrilled the large crowd of marines and navy personnel who enjoyed the fights which will be telecast over PBO on Sky Cable at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday with a replay on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
None was more breathtaking than the spectacular 3rd round knockout scored by Al Rivera of the Brumswick Stable in Santa Rosa who iced previously undefeated Adones Cabalquinto in a welterweight showdown that had the fans on their feet, first because of the sensational performance by Rivera and then out of concern for Cabalquinto who lay prostrate on the canvas for several minutes while ringside doctors administered oxygen to the fallen fighter.
In what was considered a stunning upset, previously unbeaten southpaw and Philippine super lightweight champion Adones Cabalquinto who had a record of 21-0 with 14 knockouts suffered a 3rd round knockout at the hands of the talented No. 2 ranked lightweight Al Rivera.
Both fighters engaged in torrid exchanges from the opening bell with Cabalquinto looking to establish his superiority but Rivera who appeared to be a little tense at the beginning quickly settled down and got into a rhythm.
We had witnessed Rivera spar six torrid rounds with lefty Michael Farenas a couple of years ago and were impressed with his quickness and power and predicted an upset which Rivera delivered.
Immediately after a clash of heads with blood dripping from a wound on his scalp, Rivera threw a devastating left hook that sent Cabalquinto crashing to the canvas to be counted out by referee Virgilio Garcia at 0:30 seconds of the third round.
Cabalquinto, a star from the MP Boxing Stable lay prostrate on the canvas and was administered oxygen by the ring doctors for a couple of minutes while Rivera and his handlers rejoiced over the victory.
It was Cabalquinto?s first setback and he drops to 21-1 with 14 knockouts while Rivera improves to 14-2 with 12 knockouts.
In another fierce encounter talented flyweight Ryan Lumacas who is trained by Pacquiao?s assistant trainer Nonoy Neri won a ten round unanimous decision with an excellent performance against rugged Jetly Purisima.
