
MPSC SLUGFEST: Pacman-Labangal is grandslam champion

TEAM Pacman-Labangal won two golds, two silvers and three bronze medals to emerge grandslam champion in the 3rd Manny Pacquiao Sports Challenge Mindanao Open Amateur Boxing tournament on Tuesday at the Robinsons Place in General Sand antos City.
Pacman-Labangal, composed of boxers from Digos City but supported by 8-time division champion Manny Pacquiao thru Barangay Captain Lorelie Pacquiao, scored a total 13 points to earn P25,000 cash prize plus a trophy.
Medals were also awarded to the individual winners including Labangal?s gold medalists Ar-Jay Recopelacion (Junior Boys Pinweight (46 kgs.) and Jean Minguillan (Junior Girls Pinweight 46 kgs.).
Labangal also got two silvers courtesy of Richard Bulacan (Youth Boys light flyweight (49 kgs.) and Jastine Tesoro (Youth Boys flyweight 52 kgs.) and three bronze medals from Lue Jay Tumandam (school boys mosquito 40 kgs.), Reymark Alicaba (Jr. Boys 48 kgs.) and Renlie Barang (Jr. Girls 48 kgs.).
?Ito lang ang kaya naming maibigay sa aming boss na si Congressman Manny Pacquiao. Nagpapasalamat talaga kami sa kanyang suporta sa amin,? said Labangal head coach Renato Moreno, a former stablemate of Pacquiao.
Pacman-Labangal was also the over-all team champion in 2013 and 2014.
Cagayan de Oro City got one gold, three silvers and two bronze medals for a total of 11 points to place over-all first runner-up followed by Lutayan of Sultan Kudarat with nine points for pocketing one gold, two silvers and two bronze medals.
Backyard of Gensan took the third runner-up honors over Gensan BoxingAcademy in a tie-break after both earning seven points. Backyard, which pocketed one gold, one silver and two bronzes, had more entries against only three by GBA, which only got two medals ? both golds from the Mama twins Jerwin (Youth Boys 49 kgs.) and Jayson (52 kgs.).
Digos City placed 6th with five points followed by Sarangani (4 pts.), Pres. Roxas (4 pts.), Malungon (3 pts.), Iligan (2 pts.) and Davao City (1 pt.).
CDO under coach Billy Payla got a gold medal from Gina Casin (junior girls lightflyweight 48 kgs.), who used her reach advantage to beat Batang Pinoy National Games silver medalist Maria Alona Castardo by a unanimous decision.
Lutayan mentored by Jimmy Cubay got its lone gold medal from John Rey Lacibal, who outclassed CDO?s Den Mark Quirubo in the Elite bantamweight 58 kg. division.
Rey Mark Ibonez won Backyard?s gold medal via a split decision over Lutayan?s Arnold Montales in the Elite light bantamweight. Davao?s Jommilardo Ogayre and Roxas? Mark Antonio both shared the bronzes.
The 5-day event was organized by the Manny Pacquiao Sports Association (MPSA) with event coordinator Sannie Sombrio in coordination with the City Sports and Games Division.
