Irin, Bangcaya rule MPSC chess tourney

GEN. SANTOS CITY -- Berhamin Irin of Bongao, Tawi-Tawi and Grace Bangcaya of General Santos City shared top honors in the chess competition of the 3rd Manny Pacquiao Sports Challenge Mindanao-wide held Monday at the Robinsons Place here.

Irin scored 4.0 points to rule the men?s division. He started with back-to-back wins against last year?s champion Elias Banguiran of Gensan and Enrique Donayre of Tagum City.

Irin, who earlier played a friendly match with Sarangani Province Rep. Manny Pacquiao at the congressman?s mansion 2, then settled a draw with Iligan?s Marcos Alexander Cabaro in the third round.

Irin came back strong in the next two rounds with straight wins over Tabawan?s Alpastini Sabirucca and Sarangani?s Eddie Bagcatin.

Pitchraof Sali of Simunul, Tawi-Tawi earned second place at 3.5 points and with better quotient over Banguiran, Cabaro and Sabirucca. Banguiran settled for third place followed by Cabaro and Sabirucca in that order.

Bangcaya, on the other hand, topped the distaff side with 2.0 points and also in a tie-break against Iligan?s Minda Tucodon, who settled for second place.

Third was Sarangani?s Rosemarie Mepranum followed by Tagum?s Menllie Ortiz.

The event was among the 11 sports played by the government employees and elected officials of different local government units in the 5-day annual competition organized by the Manny Pacquiao Sports Association (MPSA). The awarding rites of all events was held yesterday at the SM Trade Mall Gensan. ? LITO DELOS REYES
