TEAMS Pacman-Labangal and Cagayan de Oro City both earned four final seats yesterday for today?s championships of the 3rd Manny Pacquiao Sports Challenge Mindanao Amateur Boxing tournament at the Robinsons Place in General Santos City.

Labangal?s finalists are Arjay Recopelacion, Richard Bulacan, Jastine Tesoro and Jean Minguillian, while for CDO are Mark Lester Durenz, John Paul Estremos, Den Mark Quisudo and Gina Casin.

Recopelacion outclassed Backyard?s Harley Davidson Tumanda by a unanimous decision to enter the finals of the junior boys 46 kilograms. He will face Estremos, who ousted Rico Antonio of Pres. Roxas by a split.

Bulacan will face Gensan?s Jerven Mama in the Youth Boys 49 kgs. while Tesoro takes on Mama?s twin brother Jayson in the 52 kg. division.

Minguillian stopped Lyka Algodon of Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat in 1:45 of the first round of the junior girls 46 kgs.

The much-awaited third encounter between early-favorite Jeane Racid Baloy of Gensan and Maria Alona Castardo of Digos ended up in controversy.

Baloy?s coach Ting Laurente went up to the ring to stop the fight in protest of referee Emmanuel Brilliantes? second mandatory 8-count in 1:41 of the first round only.

The referee from Malungon first gave a mandatory 8-count to Baloy after she had exchanged punches with Castardo.

?Mas malakas kasi ang tumama na suntok kay Baloy,? said Brilliantes, who again counted Baloy after she absorbed another right straight.

?Lipay kaayo ko na nakadaug na dyud ko sa iyaha,? said the 15-year old Castardo, who only won her first of their three encounters.

Castardo, a Grade 9 student of Digos National High School lost to Baloy in their first two fights both by split decisions during the Batang Pinoy Mindanao Qualifying held in Koronadal and in the National Finals in Cebu recently.

Castardo, 15 only settled for the silver medal while Baloy pocketed the gold in both fights.

Another controversial decision was the semifinal bout of Davao?s Jommilardo Ogayre and Lutayan?s Arnold Motales in the Elite Boys 55 kgs. Division.

Motales won by a split decision despite absorbing jabs from Ogayre. Judges Eddie Sudario of Tulunan, Cotabato and King Valerio of Gensan both scored it 29-28 for Motales, while national lady referee-judge Cecilia Escobar of CDO saw it 29-28 for Ogayre.
