As expected, open boxing powerhouse team Cagayan de Oro City racked up three gold medals in the boys category of the recently concluded Philippine National Youth Games/ Batang Pinoy National Championships at the New Cebu Coliseum. Lady boxers saved the day for Leyte Sports Academy and General Santos City as it swept the first two finals bouts and the last three, respectively.

Over a hundred boxers from 41 teams representing different LGU's in the country joined the prestigious national tournament for twelve to fifteen year-old youth boys and girls. The five-day competition had an overall total of 132 bouts from the eliminations to the finals and was being organized by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee.

First gold medal went to volume-punching Alexander Bonita of Cebu Province as he defeats Rodel Gamo of Bago City by UD in kids vacuum weight. Next was another UD win for Jericho Acaylar over Ian Jhunrel Nanet of Cotabato Province for CDO's first gold in kids ant weight. Jhayvie Donaire wins gold for Maasin City as he utilized pin-point boxing to outpoint Aleosan, Cotabato Province's bet Moemen Kalibo in kids minimum weight. Team Cebu City secured gold as Eduardo Jimenez wins via WO when opponent John Mark Miranda of Tayabas fails the pre-fight medical examination in kids powder weight. Another gold for CDO City was assured when a very calm and collected John Vincent Pangga pick apart a courageous pug from Panabo City, Christian Betonio in kids light mosquito weight.

School boys mosquito weight gold medalist John Vincent Pangga of CDO City used his apparent advantage in size and reach to beat a very competitive Keyt Nino Abatayo of Cebu Province. Light paper weight Ramil Pingol edges out Dexter Louie Racoma of Agusan del Sur for LSA's first gold. Paper weight champion was Glen Dumam-ag of Mandaluyong City, considered the Rocky Balboa of the tournament because of the sheer guts he displayed all throughout the tournament and the determination to continue competing after suffering a huge swelling on his right eyelid in his very first bout. Action went back and forth but Dumam-ag's heavier blows paved the way for a UD win vs. Jefferson Calinawan of CDO City.

School boys 46-kg gold medalist Berland Robles of Cebu Province also had to summon enough strength to sweep the final round and register a nail-biting SD win over Labangal GenSan's Ar-Jay Recopelacion. Multiple national tournament champion Lloyd Jabez Antoque of Tagbilaran City captured the team's only gold medal with a workmanlike performance against Milenino Anduyan of LSA in the school boys pin weight division. Dominique Casanares of Mandaue City seized the delegation's lone gold in boxing with a UD win against Kim Delmar Macaangga of Labangal GenSan in light fly weight division. Panabo City's Christian Austria outscored Mark Lyndon Bolanos of Bago City for a UD victory in the fly weight class. Another Panabo City pug, Jet Bruce Fornes was also fortunate as he utilized superior boxing technique to beat Philip Kenneth Gensola of Cotabato Province and won the title in the 54-kg weight class.

Five finals bouts were also contested featuring young ladies from Mindanao, Leyte and Baguio City. Grycil Puso of LSA registered the first stoppage win of the night with a TKO in the first round vs. Shaira Macaludos of South Cotabato in the paper weight class. Another LSA lady pug contributed to the team's gold medal haul as Leah Catarinen wins via UD against Jonavil Juadiong of South Cotabato. Team GenSan swept the final three gold medal matches as Jean Rachel Boloy decisions Maria Alona Castardo of Labangal GenSan in the 50-kg. class, Shirllyn Gil Napoles TKO's Christine Lipriano of Baguio City in the light bantam weight division and Angela Bianca Laurente halts Cazzel Gatinao of Baguio City in the school girls bantam weight division.

The successful staging of the tournament was being supervised by Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) executive director Ed Picson, AIBA International Technical Official Maria Karina Picson and AIBA 3-star R/J Maximo Abalos. It is also important to note that Ms. Picson is the first woman in Asia to become a supervisor in AOB, WSB and APB events aside from being a member of AIBA Women's Commission. A seminar for boxing coaches was also being conducted during the first two days of the tournament with national team coaches Ronald Chavez and Glicerio Catolico. felman r. gingoyon
