12 teams in MPSC slugfest Dec. 4-8

TWELVE teams from all over Mindanao will see action starting tomorrow Dec. 4 as the 3rd Manny Pacquiao Sports Challenge Open Amateur Boxing tournament opens at 1 p.m. at the Robinson?s Place in General Santos City.

The teams are the Gensan Boxing Academy, Davao City Amateur Boxing Club (Dacaboc), Sarangani Province, Malungon, Pacman-Labangal, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Region 12 Selection, Tagum City, Prex Roxas of North Cotabato, Polomolok and Lutayan of Sultan Kudarat.

?We hope to discover the next Manny Pacquiao from this competition,? said organizer Sannie Sombrio, secretary-general of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) Region 12.

The categories are the School Boys Mosquito (38-40 kg.) and Junior Light Paperweight (40-42 kg.) for 13 to 15 years old under; Junior Boys Pinweight (44-46 kg.) and Light Flyweight (46-48 kg.) for 15 to 17 yrs. Old under; Junior Girls Pinweight (44-46 kg.) and Light Flyweight (46-48 kg.) for 15 to 17 yrs. Old below); Youth Boys Light Flyweight (46-49 kg.) and Flyweight (49-52 kg.) for 17 to 18 years old under; and Elite Boys (18-21 yrs. Old) Light bantamweight (52-55 kg.) and Bantamweight (55-58 kg.)

The 5-day event is organized by the Manny Pacquiao Sports Association (MPSA) as part of the multi-sport competition aimed to unify all the local government units in Mindanao thru sports.

The other games are basketball, volleyball, kickball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, chess, scrabble, darts, billiards and shooting.

Only boxing is participated by non-government employees or elected officials.

The MPSC is supported by the city government of Gensan, Mayor Ronnel Rivera, City Administrator Atty. Arnel Zapatos and the City Sports and Games Division. ? LITO DELOS REYES
