8 teams now confirmed for MP Open Amateur Slugfest

EIGHT teams from different local government units have already confirmed their participation to the 3rd Manny Pacquiao Sports Challenge (Mindanao) Open Amateur Boxing Tournament slated on Dec. 3-8 at the Robinson?s Mall in General Santos City.

?Out of 10, eight are now confirmed,? said Sonnie Sombrio, secretary-general of the Association of Boxing Alliance in the Phils. (ABAP) 12.

The teams are from General Santos City, Sarangani Province, Pacman Labangal of Brgy. Labangal, GenSan; Tagum City, Pres. Roxas of North Cotabato, Iligan City, Lutayan of Sultan Kudarat and the newly-formed Davao City Amateur Boxing Club (Dacaboc).

Dacaboc, which is headed by Calinan Kagawad Renato ?Tata? Villafuerte, previously won one gold and one silver medal from John Ednoel Prevendido (school boys 48 kg.) and Efrelan Loreto (schools boys 50 kg.) in their first participation in the Batang Pinoy Mindanao Qualifying leg.

GenSan, on the other hand, pocketed two golds both from the girls? category courtesy of Shirllyn Gil Napoles (54 kg.) and Jeane Raciel Boloy (50 kg.) and four silvers with one bronze medal.

Labangal got two golds from Ar-Jay Recopelacion (46 kg.) and Kim Delmar Macaangga (50 kg.) plus three silvers and one bronze while Lutayan went home with two bronzes.

Sarangani also earned two medals from the school girls - one gold from Deborah Grace Bustamante (44 kg.) and a bronze from Shane Berdejo (54 kg.).

?The two other teams will be known next week upon their confirmation,? said Sombrio, who is in-charge of boxing in the organizing Manny Pacquiao Sports Association (MPSA).

The opening program is on Dec. 3 while the competition starts on Dec. 4. The championships and awarding is on Dec. 8.

The categories are the School Boys Mosquito (38-40 kg.) and Junior Light Paperweight (40-42 kg.) for 13 to 15 years old under; Junior Boys Pinweight (44-46 kg.) and Light Flyweight (46-48 kg.) for 15 to 17 yrs. Old under; Junior Girls Pinweight (44-46 kg.) and Light Flyweight (46-48 kg.) for 15 to 17 yrs. Old below); Youth Boys Light Flyweight (46-49 kg.) and Flyweight (49-52 kg.) for 17 to 18 years old under; and Elite Boys (18-21 yrs.
