Former WBC minimum weight challenger Rodel Mayol who is currently ranked No. 3 by the IBF fights reigning light flyweight champion Ulises Solis not WBC champion Edgar Sosa as both Mayol and his longtime handler Joy Ouano announced on Thursday.
In an overseas telephone conversation with Mayol at the home of Terry Carter and Ouano in Georgia, the fighter apologized to Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today for the error and said he would fight IBF champion Solis, the brother of Jorge Solis, the previously undefeated but unknown Mexican who was knocked out in the eighth round by Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao last April 14.
Solis is believed to be a better fighter than Sosa and Mayol is expected to have a tough time against him. However, Mayol who is scheduled to leave for Las Vegas today to step up training at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas expressed confidence that no matter whether it be Solis or Sosa this was a dream come true and he didnt plan to let go of the chance to win a world title this time.
He said he had no problems moving up in weight and indicated he was comfortable at 108 pounds and as a result hits harder now. Mayol lost to WBC minimum weight champion, Japan-based Thai Eagle Kyowa on May 6, 2006. Mayol who apparently was ill and didn't train hard enough dominated the first five rounds but lost steam and lost a unanimous twelve round decision.
Solis won the IBF title with a unanimous decision over Will Grigsby at Madison Square Garden on January 7, 2006 and then successfully defended his title with a ninth round TKO over former WBC champion Eric Ortiz on March 25, 2006. Ortiz had earlier lost his title via a sensational first round KO at the hands of Brian Viloria.
In his last fight the 25 year old Solis who has a record of 24-1-2 with 18 KO?s scored a ninth round TKO over another former WBC champion Jose Antonio Aguirre last May 19.
In an email to Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Mayol said "Sir, sorry mali pala yung narining ni maam Joy naa naibigay sa kanya tungkol sa fight ko. I?ll be fighting in IBF 108 pounds against Ulises Solis of Mexico, not WBC. Sorry sir. Thank you very much. God bless."
Ouano said the fight had been arranged by Michael Koncz, an adviser of Pacquiao, who is connected to Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.
The correction was made after WBC executive director Mauricio Sulaiman informed us that the information on the Mayol-Sosa fight was not accurate "because Sosa has his mandatory next. It went to a purse bid and Golden Boy Promotions won the bid. Sosa vs Argentina?s 36 year old Luis Alberto Lazarte who has a record of 37-6-1 with 17 KO?s is set for July 28 in Cancun, Mexico.
