Promising Aliston Palicte scored a lopsided twelve round decision over game Vergilio Silvano to win the WBO super flyweight title before a large crowd of Philippine Marines and Navy personnel at the beautiful, air-conditioned Philippine Navy Gymnasium in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig on Friday night.
A product of the Manny Pacquiao boxing stable in Davao City, Palicte who is trained by Pacquiao assistant Nonoy Neri, used rapid-fire combinations to thwart the aggressive tactics of Silvano from the Omega Boxing Stable in Cebu who tried to get under the long reach of Palicte and work to the body but was often stymied by the telling jabs of the lanky Palicte.
All three judges had Palicte the winner by a handy margin. Salvador Lopez scored the fight 118-108 while Gil Co and Jerrold Tomeldan had Palicte the winner with identical scorecards of 116-110.
With the win Palicte improved to 20-1 with 17 knockouts and erased the memory of his lone defeat at the same venue on December 1, 2012 when he retired at the end of the 4th round in a battle with Romnick Magos for the vacant WBO Youth flyweight title.
Magos was dropped in the opening round but he came back to send Palicte to the canvas in the 3rd and 4th rounds to seal the victory and hand Palicte his only defeat so far.
The 5?7? Palicte enjoyed a five inch reach advantage and was ranked No. 2 super flyweight by the Games and Amusements Board while Silvano 5?2? was ranked No. 15 in the flyweight division.
In a stunning upset previously unbeaten southpaw and Philippine super lightweight champion Adones Cabalquinto who had a record of 21-0 with 14 knockouts suffered a 3rd round knockout at the hands of the talented No. 2 ranked lightweight Al Rivera of the Brusmick Boxing Stable in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
Both fighters engaged in torrid exchanges from the opening bell with Cabalquinto looking to establish his superiority but Rivera who appeared to be a little tense at the beginning quickly settled down and got into a rhythm.
We had witnessed Rivera spar six torrid rounds with lefty Michael Farenas a couple of years ago and were impressed with his quickness and power and predicted an upset which Rivera delivered.
Immediately after a clash of heads with blood dripping from a wound on his scalp, Rivera threw a devastating left hook that sent Cabalquinto crashing to the canvas to be counted out by referee Virgilio Garcia at 0:30 seconds of the third round.
Cabalquinto, a star from the MP Boxing Stable lay prostrate on the canvas and was administered oxygen by the ring doctors for a couple of minutes while Rivera and his handlers rejoiced over the victory.
It was Cabalquinto?s first setback and he drops to 21-1 with 14 knockouts while Rivera improves to 14-2 with 12 knockouts.
