ROACH SAYS AMONSOT HAS A VERY GOOD SHOT AGAINST KATSIDIS

Celebrated trainer Freddie Roach says WBO Asia Pacific lightweight champion Czar Amonsot has a “very good shot” against WBO champion Michael Katsidis of Australia on the undercard of the big Golden Boy Promotions fight card featuring Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins against Winky Wright at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on July 21.

In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Roach said Amonsot was “boxing and looking very good” in training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles and they had an advantage because Roach said “I trained the boy he’s fighting.” The two-time “Trainer of the Year” predicted “it should be a good fight.”

Roach disclosed that Amonost had a “great workout” in a sparring session with an undefeated fighter from Ghana who has a record of 18-0 with 17 knockouts but Roach couldn’t remember his name.

Earlier, respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer prior to his departure for LA to be at the bedside of his ailing mother who passed away the other day said the undefeated Katisidis who has a record of 22-0 with 20 knockouts is “a heavy puncher” but believes that Amonsot who has been training for a July 7 title defense of his WBO Asia Pacific crown and was slated to fight in the August 11 Philippines-Mexico World Cup has “a very good chance and is in excellent shape.”

He said Amonsot who was ejected from the ALA Gym as a disciplinary measure and lost his title to Simon Butar Butar by a first round KO when he didn’t train and failed to look after himself had changed completely and had “no weight problems, no family problems and no problems at all.”

Amonsot, the 21 year old southpaw has a record of 18-2-1 with 10 knockouts and is coming off a split decision win over South Korea’s Da Woo Jung where he captured the WBO Asia Pacific lightweight title in a fight telecast by Viva Sports over its top-rated weekly boxing show the “Main Event” sponsored by Tanduay, the No.1 Rhum, Pagcor and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

Katisidis has scored fifth round TKO wins over Filipinos Nonoy Gonzales last Mach 3, 2006 and before that against Ranee Ganoy on August 19, 2005 when Ganoy who is based in Sydney, Australia was short on preparation. He won the world interim title last February 17 when Graham Earl retired in the fifth round.
