Former multi-division world boxing champion and pound for pound king Roy Jones Jr is now a Russian and has proudly shown his new Russian passport which he received at during a ceremony in Moscow, yesterday.
Jones Jr stated ?I am Russian? in the Russian language and claimed it was ome of the happiest days of his life.
The Russian news agency TASS reported that Jones would fight for a WBA title in Moscow on December 12.
Russian president Vladimir Putin had previously met with Jones and given him the approval to become a Russian citizen who will reportedly face Denis Lebedev for the WBA cruiser weight title.
In accepting his Russian passport Jones told a news conference in Moscow he wanted to specifically thank President Putin for presenting him with a passport which would make his job of training fighters and promoting fight cards much easier since he won?t have to go through the hassle of obtaining a visa every time he travels to Russia.
Jones remarked that it ?feels nothing better than to be a citizen of both the USA and Russia? and added, ?this is definitely something that was ordained by God and not myself,? even as he wanted to encourage other people to go to Russia ?because Russia is good and the people of Russia are good.?
Jones lost by a 10th round knockout to Lebedev in 2011 aside from defeats at the hands of Bernard Hopkins and Danny Green . However, since his loss to Lebedev, Jones has won his last eight fights against comparatively mediocre opponents.
