THE Davao City amateur boxing team made its presence felt by winning all their two bouts at the opening of the 2015 Batang Pinoy Mindanao Leg held Sunday at the Osita Central Elementary School covered court in Koronadal City.
Light pinweight John Ednoel Prevendido landed pummelling blows to score a technical knockout win in 1:23 of the second round against Koronadal's Jovic Carl Estanduan in the final bout of the opening day.
Prevendido, 13, connected an uppercut early in the second round that resulted to Estanduan's first mandatory count by the referee.
Prevendido, a bronze medalist in the recent Digos Invitational Open tournament, then bombarded his much-taller rival with bodyblows and a left hook to the face for the final count and the victory in the 48 kilogram.
"Siya talaga ang isa sa pinaka pambato namin," said DC boxing team manager Renato "Tata" Villafuerte, a barangay Kagawad of Calinan.
Earlier, lanky John Mark Tohoy gave Davao its first win with a come-from-behind victory over Rogene Quenoviva of Barangay Sto. Nino, Koronadal in the 46 kg. division.
The 5-foot-6 Tohoy started slow and allowed his opponent to throw first the punches in the first round. Tohoy, 14, finally started to counter punch to win by a split decision.
Referees Rolando Jose and Fernie Lou Abing both scored it 29-28 for Tohoy while referee Rosevic Abeto gave it 30-27 for Quenoviva.
"Buti na lang nanuntok na siya sa last round," said head coach Jun Sagarino.
As of press time, three other Davao boxers are making their debut in the 5-day event organized by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Association of Boxing Affiliates of the Phils. (Abap).
Emmanuel Canubas takes on Jhon Charel Rosas of Barangay 6-Cagayan de Oro in the 28-30 kg. kid's vacuum division while Cyril Ivan Revilla is facing Christian Betonio of the defending champion Panabo City in the kids light mosquito weight (38 kg.).
Adrian Keith Fernandez debuts against Marlon Moralde Jr. of Team Tyron Uy-Comval Province in the boys mosquito 38-40 kg.
The DC boxing team also has Reynon Albupera (ant 32 kg.), Cyrilivan Revilla (powder 36 kg.) and Efrelan Loreto (50 kg.), a young brother of reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) world light flyweight champion Rey "Hitman" Loreto.
A total of 164 boxers from different local government units are vying for the slots to the National Finals slated next month in Cebu City.
"We're truly happy of the huge turnout that only shows the great interest to the sport," said ABAP Executive Director Ed Picson.
