BRAWL AT THE MALL: Demecillo revalidates win over Basadre

Metuda cops WBF Asia-Pacific crown
GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? Cebu?s Kenny Demecillo revalidated his previous victory over local bet Daryl ?Flash? Basadre in their much-awaited exciting rematch by scoring another knockout win to bag the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Asia-Pacific bantamweight crown Saturday night at the Gaisano Mall Atrium here.
But Demecillo, also reigning WBA Oceania bantamweight title-holder, did it now in a hard way, unlike in their first encounter last June 7 held in another mall which only ended up early in the second round but with a little controversy.
This time, Demecillo survived a knockdown in the second round and came back strong at the end of the same round. Basadre failed to make the follow-up and allowed Demecillo to answer back with his own left-right combinations.
Demecillo even shook Basadre with a solid straight but the home-town fighter was luckily saved by the bell.
In the next round, Demecillo continued his relentless attack despite the snipping of jabs by Basadre.
Both fighters traded punches evenly from the third to the seventh round. And both of them were already very tired and gasping for air.
Demecillo, however, proved a tougher nut to crack as he was still able to knock down Basadre in the dying minutes of the 8th round.
Basadre still managed to stand up after the mandatory count and tried to again mix it up with Demecillo.
But age-less referee Adbul Marajan finally put a stop to the fight after seeing the helpless Basadre not answering already Demecillo?s punches.
Marajan clinched on Basadre, who was about to collapse but was immediately saved by the medical team. Basadre was rushed to the hospital but for precautionary measures only.
?Basadre is now okay. He was just only very tired and his knees were already shaky. But he is now okay and he was still conscious when I was talking to him,? said manager-promoter Dexter ?Wangyu? Tan of Sanman Promotions.
Demecillo of Omega Boxing gym improved his record to 11 wins against 3 defeats and 1 draw while Basadre dropped to 14 wins, 3 defeats and 1 draw.
?Lig-on dyud pud si Demecillo maski unsaon ug sumbag ni Basadre,? said Sanman Promotions CEO Jim Claude Manangquil.
?I think this fight could be the Fight of the Year,? said PTV 11?s boxing reporter Dennis Principe.
Sanman?s Rimar Metuda, however, captured the vacant WBF Asia-Pacific featherweight title by a technical knockout win in 1:41 of the 5th round over the dangerous Jason Tinampay of Bohol.
Metuda kept his composure despite the continuous attack of Tinampay since the bell rang in the opening round.
?Sige siya ug dasdas. Mao ako na lang gina hit and run ug gina target kay lig-on pud siya (He kept on attacking that?s why I opted to hit and run and just made him a target ?coz he was also a solid one),? said Metuda.
The 21-year old Metuda landed telling blows which resulted to Tinampay?s swollen right eye and bloodied nose in the fourth round.
?Nalipay kaayo ko ug dako kay nag-champion nako (I?m very happy because I am now a champion),? said Metuda, who is still undefeated with 8 wins, 4 by knockouts and no draw.
Tinampay, 20, only suffered his 2nd loss against 7 wins and no draw.
Meanwhile, reigning World Boxing Council Asia featherweight champion John Vincent ?Mulawin? Moralde also of Sanman lived up to his lofty billing by scoring a convincing unanimous decision over Omega?s Jerry Castroverde.
Moralde, who was hit by a low blow in the 7th round, wisely used a hit-and-run technique to foil Castroverde?s attack and earned all the nod of the three judges.
Moralde, a native of Davao City, remained undefeated with 14 wins, no loss or draw while Castroverde dropped to 7-2-0 win-loss-draw card.
Moralde?s older brother Engelbert, however, failed to make a successful comeback after more than a year of hiatus in boxing.
Engelbert, now 8-3-0, bowed to Cebu?s Joy Formentera (7-1-0) by a split decision in their 8-rounder bout.
Five other Sanman fighters also prevailed in the undercard.
World Boxing Council Asia and International Boxing Organization (IBO) Inter-continental flyweight champion Raymond ?Tornado? Tabugon (17-3-0) pummeled to submission Zamboanga?s Jong Sabellina in 2:35 of the first round by a technical knockout.
Markquil ?Gunz? Salvana also remained undefeated by stopping former Philippine flyweight champion Philip Parcon in 1:46 of the 6th round by a technical knockout.
Salvana, who was dominating the fight, was knocked down first by Parcon early in the fourth round.
But Salvana bounced back with his own left-right combinations that forced Parcon to quit after he was downed to the canvas in the 6th round.
?Magic? Mike Angelou Plania scored the quickest win by knocking out Zamboanga?s Roland Magluyan in just 38 seconds with a body punch for his 7th win against no loss or draw.
Reymart Gaballo TKO?d Frejun dela Cruz in 2:33 of the first round after stablemate Jenny Boy Buca knocked out Michael Padayag in 35 seconds of the second round.
The curtain raiser saw upcoming Vince Paras of Maasim Mayor Lopez scoring a 4th round knockout over Gensan?s Sadam Barambangan.
The free boxing show witnessed by at least 3,000 fans was supported by SAFI Meat Shop, Mt. Sabrina Mountain Resort, Meatty Ribol, Gaisano Mall of Gensan, Sydney Hotel, Rep.
