The longest reigning Filipino world champion, WBO light flyweight king Donnie ?Ahas? NIetes looked awesome in a two-hour workout at the ALA Gym along Balete Drive in Quezon City on Wednesday evening.
His trainer, Edmund Villamor attributed the success and improvement of Nietes to his discipline, hard-work and staying in shape in-between fights. He told the New Standard/boxingmirror that Nietes stays in shape and maintains his weight by cycling and playing basketball.
Nietes will leave for the US early next week after obtaining his visa from the US embassy.
During his training on Wednesday, Villamor simulated the style of his opponent in the main event, Mexican champion Juan "Pinky" Alejo who has a record of 21-3 with 13 knockouts, working on hooks and overhead punches which the trainer and Nietes studied and planned om how to counter, together.
The Nietes-Alejo title fight will headline the inaugural presentation by ALA Promotions and the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN and TFC, the Filipino Channel which has a huge following particularly in the middle east on ?Pinoy Pride 33? at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on October 17.
We noticed that Nietes?s power had grown remarkably in his last couple of fights with Villamor pointing out that ?his power has developed tremendously? which we witnessed while Nietes ripped into the punch-mitts and showed excellent footwork and movement.
Edmund Villamor said ?he is getting stronger and when he hit me once, my shoulder hurt so I stopped for a little while."
The trainer who was named as the ?Trainer of the Year? for three consecutive years at the ?Flash? Elorde Annual Awards said Nietes was a ?very disciplined individual, a fine boxer and a very nice person.?
He revealed that the ambition of Nietes for a long time was to face WBC flyweight champion and now No. 1 in the Ring pound for pound rankings, undefeated Roman ?Chocolatito? Gonzalez of Nicaragua who is scheduled to defend his title against two-division champion Brian Viloria at New York?s Madison Square Garden on October 17, the same day Nietes defends his title at the StubHub Center.
Villamor commended Nietes who he said that while a fight with Gonzalez ?is his ambition, whoever he fights he is focused on training.?
Among Nietes? sparring partners in Cebu were former OPBF flyweight champion Rocky Fuentes who had fought and lost to Gonzalez, newcomer Jake Cataraja who is known for his speed and footwork and Rob Lulu among others.
Villanueva said ?we can fight if we have to, we can box if we have to, if he runs we can catch him and we can engage if we need to.?
The multi-titled trainer told us he is confident Nietes can win by knockout but he ?will not be in a hurry or take any risks because we have to be careful not to take unnecessary risks because we could be caught and in trouble.?
Villamor said Nietes will have time to spar with V iloria who is training at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach because it will be beneficial to both fighters and indicated the handlers of Viloria have been looking forward to have him spar with Nietes.
