Golingan wants a Gomera-Ponteras rematch

BOXING manager Brian Golingan of General Santos City wants a rematch for his undefeated boxer Jilbert Gomera against Ryan Rey Ponteras of Agusan del Norte.

?This is to end the controversy of their fight in Gensan,?said Golingan, who met Ponteras? trainer Bruce Lerio in Davao City last Monday.

Gomera, current Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) super bantamweight champion, won by a split decision over Ponteras in their 8-rounder bout to keep his unblemished record of 10 wins with six knockouts and no loss or draw.

However, many thought that Ponteras, a former International Boxing Federation (IBF) Pan Pacific flyweight title-holder, should have won the match.

Matchmaker Joven Jimenez earlier said that ?Ponteras should have won the fight because he was more aggressive and had landed more telling blows,? Gomera showed his dominance at the start of the fight but slowed down in the last three rounds after he suffered a deep cut due to an accidental headbutt.

??Pero hindi pa puede si Gomera lumaban agad. Nagpapagaling pa siya sa kanyang sugat na my four stitches. Baka sa December na siguro,? said the 39-year old son of veteran boxing promoter-manager Rey Golingan.

Meanwhile, Bruce Lerio, who was Ponteras? trainer at the Braveheart Stable, said that they are also willing for a rematch.
?Walang problema sa amin yan,? said Lerio, who is now connected with the Sonshine Sports Promotion.

Pronteras, 25, won the IBF Pan Pacific flyweight crown by scoring a 4th round technical knockout against Rusalee Samor of Thailand at the Rajapark Institute in Bangkok on Dec. 26, 2012.
In his next bout, Ponteras went to Japan to fight but lost by a disqualification in the 4th round to Go Onaga in Okinawa on June 2, 2013.

He bounced back with a unanimous decision over fellow Filipino fighter Nelson Llanos in their 8-rounder held Aug. 4, 2013 at the M?lang Gym in M?lang, North Cotabato.

But after that fight, Ponteras was already in-active. And his recent bout with Gomera was his comeback after more than a year of in-activity.

?Magaling na bata, hindi lang masuerte,? said his former manager Manny Pinol, who is now the producer of the coming ?Blow by Blow? TV boxing show which makes a comeback next month in ABC TV 5.

Ponteras, a native of Panabo City but now a resident of Agusan del Norte, has a record of 13 wins with 6 knockouts but with 11 defeats and 1 draw.

?Pero hindi pa yan natatalo ng knockout. Puro decisions lang,? Lerio said.

Gomera, on the other hand, has won six of his 10 fights all by separate stoppages.

In his pro debut, Gomera won against Robert Evangelio by a retirement in the first round last April 21, 2013 in Valencia City.

Gomera then scored a first round knockout on Mark Jun Tubo on Sept. 7 in Balamban, Cebu. He landed a bodyshot to knockout Tubo in just 40 seconds.

Gomera continued his victory by early stoppage via a first round technical knockout (2:43) on Ruben Baldoz on Feb. 22, 2014 at the Gensan Oval Plaza.

Gomera then stopped Jordan Catubay in the final 6thround (1:30) of their bout held May 24, 2014 at the Lagao gym in Gensan.

Gomera won by a technical majority decision against former Philippine flyweight champion Philip Parcon after an accidental head butt in the sixth round last June 28, at the Almendras gym in Davao City.?LITO DELOS REYES
