Hall of Fame Mexican trainer Ignacio ?Nacho? Beristain has criticized the recently retired, undefeated pound for pound No.1 Floyd Mayweather Jr saying he was unimpressed by the American's approach to the sport.
Beristain who trained Oscar De La Hoya and Juan Manuel Marquez said in an interview reported on Boxingscene and carried by Sky Sports in Britain, said ?I didn't like his way of fight. He would execute a plan for himself without satisfying the public or making some kind of spectacle. I celebrate that he's gone from boxing because people will be able to see something different, something much more spectacular in boxing. He was a very skillful fighter but he was using [his skill with the way he fought].?
However, Beristain gave Mayweather credit ?because it's no small accomplishment, to face so many fighters and remain undefeated. He was criticised for his style on many occasions because he had everything necessary to do more for the people but instead he defended himself with an intelligent and unspectacular manner."
Mayweather retired with a record of 49-0, 26KOs after outpointing Andre Berto in Las Vegas last weekend although many expect him to return for at least one more bout in order to become the first man to retire with a half-century of fights unbeaten.
There are many who believe Mayweather will return to the ring and fight eight division champion Manny Pacquiao whom he beat on points last May 2 in a fight embroiled in controversy sometime late next year in a bid to break the record of the late heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano of 49-0 which he equaled with what Pacquiao?s first trainer, American Rick Staheli described as ?more like a sparring session.?
Meantime, it seems Mayweather will be going out with one of the biggest financial duds of his professional career as Kevin Iole, of Yahoo Sports reported that Mayweather's Sept. 12 bout with Andre Berto drew somewhere between 400,000 and 550,000 pay-per-view buys?his lowest total in nearly a decade.
Iole said that while sources differed on the actual total, the sales nonetheless represent the overall tepid nature of a bout that was seen as an overwhelming mismatch from the start.
Showtime Sports executive vice president and general manager Stephen Espinoza spoke with Iole about the fight: He was quoted as having said ?To a large extent, anything we did coming off of that massive May 2 event was going to feel like a bit of a letdown. We didn't have available a really compelling list of available opponents. There's been a lot of speculation about a lot of things, but when you got down to it, there wasn't really a long list of available guys and none of them were slam dunk established stories or really compelling storylines.
Mayweather defeated Berto via unanimous decision in one of the more lopsided fights of Money's career. The judges scored the fight 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111 in Mayweather's favor, with Berto flailing around the ring and barely mounting any significant offense all night.
It was the realization of the worst-case scenario for Showtime, which just four months ago was touting the record-setting numbers of Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao.
Berto blamed Mayweather for the low numbers, according to TMZ.
